Red Kaps Choices

Hey, all!
I know that the “what color were the coveralls” question is still a hotly debated topic, but I wanted you guy’s opinions on what I should do; so, I’m going for the Red Kaps Twill Action, and was thinking of fading, and using RIT dye to tint them (and then weathering them with fabrice medium and black acrylic mix, etc. the whole nine yards essentially. Apologies for the yapping, haha) to whichever feels closer to what was seen in the OG film. Not going for 100% accuracy, of course, but the closer, the better!

Red Kaps has charcoal and spruce green options, and I was wondering whether it’d be better to get the spruce green ones, fade them and then dye with gray, or to get the charcoal ones, fade them and then dye with a dark green instead.

Thoughts?

It would be alot easier to get the spruce green coveralls, you wouldnt need to fade them. They are a great starter colour forsears tex green.

I would skip the fading and just dye them with a bottle of rit frost polyester dye grey to make it a chameleon colour, that changes from green to grey

It would be alot easier that way, the charcoal grey is darker than the green so if you soak the charcaol in dark green it will appear black and all that fading would be lost, after you fade it the green would re-darken the charcaol to black

Appreciated!

Your welcome, welcome to the forum. Instead of fading I would just wash them in hot water with a splash of bleach in
the washing machine, and a bunch of fabric softener and throw them in the dryer a few times to break them in

Would you wash them before or after you dye them?

You probably already know this but just in case: normal rit dye will not dye those coveralls. Normal rit is fine for natural textiles but the Red Kaps are 65% polyester and need a dye for synthetics like Dyemore.
