Restoring brown wool hair color to white?

Hey guys, I’m looking for some info here.
I have an old brittle 70s DP mask that I plan on stripping the hair from to use on my HMK Myers. While the hair is the same stuff used on a 75 Kirk, the color is not exact.
It has a light reddish tint to the brown and I am not particularly fond of it.
What I’d like to do is restore the color back to white or light brown and then dye it to my liking. What I’m worried about here is using chemicals that can destroy the hair.
It looks like bleach is not an option b/c it can damage the fibers. I’ve read a little about RIT color remover, but I’m not sure how it would work.
Justin Mabry once told me that dying ‘white’ hair fibers works very well b/c it picks up the dye color better, especially w/ mohair.
So basically I’m looking to restore this brown/red DP hair to a white or light brown color so that I can work with it.
Please only respond if you have experience working with hair fibers in this manner as I need methods that work.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Tommy helped me out w/ some advice involving soaking in hydrogen peroxide. I’m going to try a test sample and see how it works out. Thx for the help!
