While I’d ideally love to pick up a new score, its just not in the cards right now. As I look at my HSS Maniacal, the one thing I’ve never cared for is the eye cuts on this particular version. While I have become comfortable working on the paint and the hair, I’ve never dared to cut it. Probably because its just not reversible! I’m note sure if the eyes are too small, but it’s something. Which brings me to my questions:
What is the best way to trim the eyes? Meaning what tools do you guys use? I have a small set of curved hobby scissors which I assume would be the best, but I don’t know.
Can you give any advice from the pics below (worn shot added) on how to trim the eyes to make more accurate H1 cuts? Any suggestions would be great. If it helps, this is more of a worn piece than a display one.
I’m thinking about picking up a TOTS Elrod to practice on, but ultimately want to work on the HSS as well. Thanks in advance for any pointers.
Now I realize this is both over done, and not precise, but in matching up the eyes on this with some other masks, I’m thinking more like the pic below. The right eye is too much, but this is just a general doodle.
Yeah, that looks about right. Not sure if experts would approve, but in the past I’ve actually used nail clippers to trim the eyes a bit, but they can be a bit tricky because if you’re not careful you could get some jagged cuts if you know what I mean.
With regards to the Dremel, I assume you use a small diameter sanding wheel on a low speed to avoid burning the latex? I’ll be practicing with hobby scissors, x-acto, Dremel, clippers and everything in between before I attack it for real.
If there are chunks missing where you want latex to be, grab some mask latex, you can back the back of the eyes with some painter’s tape that will not leave any real residue on the mask and then dip toothpicks in the mask latex and over time build the parts back up.
Never would have thought of that. Like I said, I’ve been doing hobby builds for years, but never with a latex mask. There is a Smooth-on shop near me so it won’t be hard to get quality mask latex… just in case.
I would not suggest going straight to dremmel. Use cuticle scissors and ALWAYS mark them out first before cutting. The photoshop you did look like they will end up too big, I would not go much bigger than what they are now tbh
I knew the mock up was too big. My thought was just slightly enlarging them. If you think it would be best to leave them, I’m certainly not 100% committed to the change. I just thought maybe a touch bigger.
Trust me I am no expert I just don’t want you to end up disappointed if it doesn’t go right speaking from experience that’s all. I also know that modifying molded cuts can be difficult. This is one I did, as you can see the changes to size is very minute but will make that difference imo…
