Rob Zombie "General Discussion" Thread...

Due to the large amount of RZ general discussion threads that have recently been opened, I decided to make a sticky for “RZ General Discussion” purposes.
This in NO WAY relates to the discussion of the new H-2 film (We already have a section for that) but, in regards to Rob Zombie in General.
This will help keep the general discussion section more organized.
Thank You,
J

I asked J to create this sticky so we could all just have a continual discussion on thoughts of RZ so multiple threads would not clutter the board since he is a heated topic, especially as of late.

Nice work and great idea J & Matt

Great idea. Now both sides of the spectrum can share their opinion on the man who split the fanbase in one topic rather than sticking their respective heads in the sand. I want to read articulate posts on why Robert Cummings is a good thing for the Halloween franchise. Maybe this thread will hold the answer.

Sweet deal!

It’s really crazy how split the fan base is because of this. That, to me, really says something about the movie. Not even Resurrection’s uproar caused anything like this.

To continue the discussion in this topic, one point of contention is the violence in Cummings’s version of Halloween. Some say it’s detrimental to the experience, others said it was a positive addition. Personally, I fail to see how it was a good thing. The violence wasn’t realistic. It wasn’t crude. It wasn’t shocking. It was poor.

Lustig’s Maniac is a tremendously violent and ‘‘dirty’’ film, yet I feel it’s a must-see for any horror fan. It’s certainly a film I can call a masterpiece yet it’s a disgusting movie. It’s an harrowing experience and it leaves the viewer drained.

The only drain I felt with RZ’s Halloween was in my wallet. Cummings thinks he makes edgy films with violence that stuns the viewer but it only feels stupid and childish. It’s stunning alright. Stunningly dumb. I think that a truly violent Halloween film that doesn’t hold back would be a sight to behold. RZ thinks he delivered but he failed miserably at everything he tried.

I think its sometimes better to have some off-screen kills (eg. Tyra Banks in H8) so that, again, people can just come up with their own way that they may have been offed.

Hell, a body count isn’t always everything really. The original Halloween only had a body count of 3. Amityville Horror doesn’t really even have a body count…

I quite agree with what you wrote but at the same time, we must realise that the lack of on-screen grue in Carpenter’s film was a conscious decision based on low funds. Nothing more, nothing less. Didn’t Carpenter himself go back to add violence in The Fog since it was too dry for the early eighties’s standard?

I think that to truly be memorable to people today, the ideal Halloween film needs to have have truly gut wrenching violence that leaves you breathless. Violence that mark the audience. Make it real. Make it painful. Show The Shape not as an anti-hero but as the monster he is. It’s the only way to carry on the spirit of Carpenter’s film. It’s different yes, but it follows suit.

Cummings fails miserably at violence. It comes off like it came from the mind of a 12 years old trying to be scary or offensive. It looks and sounds fake. Truly mind boggling out he figures he’s good at it. Maybe it’s the sheep who worship the movies he makes.

At least, there’s none of those on this board. Fans of his yes, but not brainless morons. Which is why I have hopes for this thread. People can come on here and defend their point of view rather than try to ignore the naysayers.

Great idea for this thread, Matt and J. But personally, I think it’s not ALL Rob Cumming’s fault for the current condition of the franchise, although I can understand all the negativity directed towards him. It is in fact, still “his vision”. That being said, I really do think Malek Akkad is a big contributor to the way things have “shaped” up. It was his idea to jump start the new franchise with a remake, and he, being the producer of the series, really does have huge input into the picture. He no doubt greenlit Zombie’s remake script based solely on the performance of Zombie’s first 2 movies, and then when he realized he could get Zombie back for the the sequel, he probably just said “do what you want, we trust you, you brought Tranas Films a whole whack o’ money”, which is a huge bash to fans of the original franchise, and people that care for quality in their spook shows. Those two, hand-in-hand, have brought the series down to what it is. Remember guys, it was one of Moustapha’s kids’ ideas to cast Busta Rhymes in Resurrection, so you can’t trust Moustapha’s offspring!!!

i think the off screen kills are great!! leaves more to the imagination, the best of screen kill shoulda been paul or judiths boyfriend, theres and Linda’s boyfriend(forgot his name…)

marcus

Bob…lol.

Anyway, I think the biggest issue with Rob’s version is the fact that, unlike Resurrection, he was redoing the original. People get defensive when you recreate something they love (think of when someone covers a song you loved in the most terrible way possible). Resurrection didn’t get that because it was a new movie, and could be terrible if it wanted to…since it wasn’t remaking anything, it was new.

Rob’s on the other hand is directly connected to the original and that makes us defend it. We’re going to be passionate and defend something we care that much about.

I agree wit you buddy! Very well put!
Brent

LMAO
I was gonna say that

The Hulk remake got made what, 4-5 years after Ang Lee’s? I mean I would personally rather get another interpretation of Michael than a derivative sequel. Plus with the sequels you’re only able to get directors who aren’t very good. People can hate on Rob all they want but you have to consider that he was the one chosen for the job, they knew what they were getting.

You know I always thought that Moustapha was such a liar because on the H25 DVD he promised fans he would do the best he could and all that BS and now look where his decision’s and Malek’s decisions have taken us. Damn him for buying the rights to Halloween.

Look at this way, JC has his Halloween and RZ has His(remake tho) but is still his idea of what halloween should be…It very hard to take something that is cult classic and make a film as good or better, IMO halloween should have never been remade anyways. RZ just tried to much to make it what the “MOB” so to say wanted, a horror flick with Saw and hostal and HAlloween and a lot of RZ wrapped into one. Well that is not gonna work, Halloween has a story not just swearing and Mega violence and rape(which pissed me off). Anyways the name of the movie should have been differnt, because the only thing halloween in it was the Music theme. So to each his own, to all the RZ fans you have your version and we have are Version, but rememeber we have the ORIGINAL and you have a re-make. Just my 2 cents.

MIke

Good idea, J.

I’d like to see a continuation of the original series again, perhaps after the H2 events?

H20 and Resurrection…
Like I said, you could make a sequel to improve upon Resurrection.
