I was wondering if anyone would be willing to document a rehauling tutorial or advice for these masks. I have a 2009 Dream Sequence one coming in the mail on Wednesday and I’d really like a proper guide on how to rehaul the mask for accuracy and I’m sure others would too.
The screen used masks were definitely not haired in grey. The hair on the rotted mask was more dirty blond than the straight brown hair on the clean version, intriguingly almost matching adult Michael’s hair color. I think TOTS, like many RZ mask makers out there, was going for a more “on screen” look, where the colder color pallet gives the hair and mask a more whitish and grey appearance than it actually had. I’ve even seen some artists like Dela Torre do a mix of brown and grey to kind of consolidate the two looks.
You’re right that it definitely was not just “grey”, but the rotted mask had a gray Brown mix. No dirty blonde or blonde anywhere near it. This is seen in many photos of the copies made for production. While the color grading of the film has an affect for sure, you’ll see in the photos below that it is mainly the general lighting conditions the hair is under that causes you to see more of the grey vs brown tones, but both are there.
Note that the quality of the paint jobs varies wildly. Every one I’ve found had a yellowish cream color as the basecoat. Not a huge deal though since most of us are probably going to get them rehauled anyways.
Oh yeah, there were definitely flecks of grey in the mix, but the overall effect was a lighter brown color in relation to the clean mask. Though, I’ll admit, some of those photos look pretty bad in quality. I’d hesitate to use them for reference myself.
But the main point I was making was the color in the rot mask was much more faded in comparison to the clean mask, though not outright grey.
On another note, I wish we had more BTS and production stills of the clean mask. I just realized this is the only one I have in my archive.
I’ve got higher quality ones that I can’t post, but it’s definitely dark brown with grey. It’s a full mix, so there are more than flecks in there, which is what makes the Rotted mask hair look lighter in color. The grey lightens the overall look. You can see that in some of the photos here below of the clean, most notably in the one of Deag and Tyler, that the 2 browns are the same. One just has more grey (the rotted).
In addition to that, the hair on the clean is being contrasted against what is essentially a stark white vs the scarred that which had a darker paint job, so the clean hair is going to look a lot darker than it is.
I checked both my nearest Spirit and my local Party City today and nada for any RZ stuff. Did come home from Spirt with a Universal Classics Frankenstein, tho. It seemed better fitting than last year’s stock, and for the fact that TOTS is pulling these, I couldn’t pass it up!
So far I’ve found the rotted H1 at a Spirit Halloween (1 out of the 5 Spirit locations I’ve visited), and the H2 dream sequence at Party City. No RZ Halloween stuff at Halloween Express.
Haven’t seen the clean H1 or the hobo H2 in stores, at least not around here.
Oh that is damn purdy! And reminds me of just how far we’ve come in the game. I mean, damn! To think THIS was what a mass produced RZH2 mask looked like back in 2009:
I’ve noticed on the exposed they are over cutting them. I’d just buy a dream sequence to recut since the paint job isn’t accurate on the stock version for it, that way you have one with accurate cuts and similar finishing.
I have the first three copies just about stripped for the rehauls I’ll be doing. I did the above and cut the exposed using BTS shots. Also started to cut the holes in the scarred and rough up the neck line.
Have a question for those who know about RZ masks. Since I believe 5 masks were used in RZ H1 and H2; clean, scarred, nightmare, aged, and half mask, which mask would be the better option to buy to have all 5 since one mask (either scarred or nightmare) would have to be converted to make the aged mask. Any help? Here’s a pic of the recent TOTs line I’ve gotten. Half mask coming next.
