So I just rewatched Halloween (2018)

…we watched it at my brother’s apartment, me, my brother and his girlfriend. And wow, I came to the definitive conclusion. This and Halloween V are definitely the worst of the series. From the very beginning, with the unlikable duo of reporters and then the plethora of similar, kill-them-all characters, this is worth watching probably just once in a couple of years. Not saying that I was falling asleep, but the movie is simply no match with other, better movies of the series. The storyline of Michael being in detention for 40 years is beyond absurd.

Yes, there are 13 Halloweens, but there is something likable on almost every one of them, even Resurrection, which is so bad it’s good. Even the last two seques, which belong to the same storyline, are still more watchable than this. But this movie and Halloween V are simply, mhew.

edit: See the other thread for what I wrote about RZH 2 possibly being the third worst sequel ever.

Such a shame. The hype was out of control for this one; the new mask, Nick coming back as the Shape, JLC… Best part of this film was the mask. There were shots that really gave me that classic Kirk vibe. Too bad they couldn’t put a good story together for this one.

My brother said it was OK. For someone, who is not into the franchise as much as we are, it might be an OK horror movie. But a real fan, who tends to think about things - especially after repeteated viewings - will never end up liking this movie.

The way he smashes Dr. Sartain’s head is awesome.

But then again, they made him a 60 years old man. This is a problem, I think. But as long as he is masked and armed, he’s doing a good job, for sure.

I’m referring mostly to the 2018 movie, I liked Kills and Ends. Did he ever appear without a mask in those two? I don’t think so.

Boy, it’s getting really confusing again, as I read my previous post.

To put it simple - the 2018 Halloween is a BAD movie.

The unmasking was a terrible creative choice. From the very beginning we’re seeing Michael as a balding old man. No mystery at all to what’s behind the mask. They should never have shown anything above his neck if he wasn’t wearing the mask. It took away from the mystery of the character.

My friend, you never upset me. All I said was that things are getting confusing, because one post I say this movie is bad, the second I say a kill in it is good. Just wanted to clarify it and made the definitive statement that this indeed is a bad movie.

It had nothing to do with you.

Too many masks, I have to go with the original, I guess.

One more thing, which will always be one of the most interesting pieces of Halloween trivia ever - the fact that there is a Native-American actor behind the mask in H5. Probably one of the extremely small number of good things about this awful movie.

Bold claim and I genuinely applaud you for your honest options, tbh there’s nothing all too special about it and despite the hype and the love this movie gets, it just feels like a generic Halloween movie and it feels like they are trying to keep the mystery that H1 had but its been 40 years and Micheal has been unmasked and put in prison and there’s nothing left to him until he breaks out, even then he just loses all the mystique that the original had. But 2018 is just an OK movie.

I like to say that time solves everything and numbers never lie. Well, in this case, I watched the movie more than 6 years after its release and it helped me in forming the one, final opinion that will never change.

Though I appreciate they brought the character of Allyson. Can you imagine this movie without her? I honestly don’t even want to imagine it.

Let me also say that her crazy high school friends helped me in forming my opinion. While she is the best part of the movie, they are one of the worst.

I think its just more enjoyable all around as a film. So not necessarily a good story, just fun! I personally love the mask, how naive everyone is that there’s a monster on the loose, and how Laurie still isn’t completely immune to Michael.

I can critique nearly every film in the Halloween franchise, except for the original two, which are timeless classics. I respect all entries, including Rob Zombie’s reboot of part 1, which added fresh elements. Currently, I’m working on a fan film that honors Michael Myers and the brutal aspects I appreciate as a fan.

The 1978 Halloween is often miscategorized as just a slasher film; its depth makes it a psychological thriller. The Thorn trilogy and newer films, especially Halloween Kills, have their merits too. While some films may lack strong storylines, they shine in acting, stunts, and design elements that enhance the overall experience.

My project I am working on aims to break the mold- Audiences want films that genuinely scare them, not those with dull plots or a subpar mask or mediocre suspense. Stay tuned!

I think I tried last fall but didn’t get too far. The Laurie character was part of what ruined it for me. If they felt the need to bring her back she should have just been an old lady that still lives in the neighborhood that still remembers that night in '78 but has moved on. The whole survivalist angle was just ridiculous. There was a lot of potential to do it right this time, especially with the cool new mask but they dropped the ball.

I actually prefer H5 to 2018

its the worst. thought it was decent the first time i watched it, but after revisiting it i kept cringing at it. too much “fan service” like re-created scenes from the original but with laurie taking michael myers place, and then terrible humor thrown in. the “happy halloween michael” is worse than anything busta rhymes said in ressurection. halloween kills really wore off on me too, but at least i do like the kills in that one a lot better. i thought ends was the best of the 3. i wont say 2018 is a terrible movie or anything, its still watchable, but its easily my least favorite of the franchise

I really just want a Halloween reboot like the original. No excessive gore, more of a creep factor film, no corny humor or unwanted sex scenes, no romance, just a pure thriller

Yep, get that and have Airon Armstrong playing The Shape… :ok_hand:

OR you have the Halloween Returns option which if I’m remembering correctly was like a hybrid of H40 and H4, cayse it didn’t have a sibling connection and was set in 1988. That one could be interesting as well.

And if something is set only 10 years after the original, and said 10 years is now in the past, is it technically not a legacy sequel?

What bugged me was how Michael goes from brutal killer to stealthy ghost depending on the scene. His behavior just changes too much to feel consistent sometimes.

I’d place 2018 in the middle of my ranking. I recently did a fan edit of 2018. I re-edited the movie extensively to the point it’s no longer the same movie anymore.

I did it to make it more in line with the original. As well to fix the pacing. Make the characters more likable, and remove the cringey dialogue. Fix Michael’s characterization so that he doesn’t have these out of character moments. And fix the narrative so that it’s less messy, and makes more sense. I also made other changes to fix the film.

It kinda revealed there was a potentially decent movie in there, that got butchered in the editing process. It’s really unfortunate.
