Spirit Halloween...

This? Not sure if that’s real burlap, though. https://www.spirithalloween.com/product/wicked-scarecrow-full-mask/216615.uts?Extid=sf_froogle

Unfortunately, no, that’s not the one.

Now that I think about it, the whole experience was… odd.

There was only ONE mask like it in the entire store. They had multiple scarecrow-type masks (I think I remember 2 for sure, maybe 3) but only ONE that was REALLY REALLY good. The others were kind of cheap-looking and typical store-sold costume stuff.

I was walking around the store… saw the Myers set-up first as it was near the entrance… made my way through the costume section and the decor section, and finally ended up near the masks. I’m not exaggerating when I say I noticed the scarecrow mask from a distance… it caught my eye while I was in the costume section a good 40-50 feet away. It was immediate. It didn’t look like it belonged in the store, quite frankly. It was on a whole other level of craftsmanship and artistry compared to anything else in the store.

As I said, it was made with real burlap. The sack was made to look old and partially rotten, sort of falling apart. Underneath the burlap was a monster face… it’s hard for me to remember exactly what it looked like. I just remember thinking the colors seemed so much more vibrant than all of the other masks in the store. The other scarecrow masks didn’t even come close to matching the quality of color in this mask. The burlap was a rich, dusty brown… like it had been found in an old barn earlier that morning. the weathering on the burlap was done well… it didn’t look like it was at risk of falling apart further if you know what I mean. Sometimes, when working with organic materials like that, it’s difficult to make the weathering look convincing while maintaining the structural integrity of the piece. This looked like it was for real falling apart, but still solid and not at risk of further deterioration. I hope that makes sense.

Also, the colors on the monster face were vibrant and top-shelf quality. I mean, it looked hand painted by an indie artist. For real.

Ironically, the tag on it was plain. I don’t recall seeing a brand. It was just… I don’t know… a tag. Nothing remarkable. The price had been stickered onto the tag with a label gun. It was over $100. I don’t recall the exact price, but it was high enough for me to think, “that’s a lot of cash for just the headpiece of a costume. I’d need to drop at least another $150 to complete the costume… eh… maybe not…”

I went back to it twice and showed my wife. She saw the price and was like, “absolutely not.” lol.

Eventually, a few days later I decided to swing by the store after work and nab the mask. Ask for forgiveness later kind of thing.

It was gone. I frikin’ knew better, man. I knew that thing was a diamond. No way was it still going to be there.

I don’t know where it came from, or why it was in that store, but it was the most out-of-place item I’ve seen in a Spirit.

I feel like I played a small role in a R.L. Stine book or something, lol. Maybe I dodged a bullet by not buying it. :myers:

I hope they have it this year.

Just why???

I love Spirit Halloween I’m going to try to go next month or at least October I love seeing all their animatronics and speaking of animatronics I want to get that Reagan from The Exorcist one it looks amazing. Hopefully by the time I go they’ll have the Halloween ends stuff out I sure hope so cuz I want to pick from the selection they have up on the rack. There’s nothing worse than ordering a mask off Amazon or Ebay and then when you get it it turns out to be nothing but a crap copy been down that road too many times and I’m sick and tired of it.

IDK, the Bunny one is kinda creepy.

Then again, I have a soft spot for burlap scarecrow masks.

J
Lowes has this stuff. The lights play a strange version of the theme. But I like the half face projector.

Hey Swamp! No way!:+1::beers: So damn cool thank you brother:jack_o_lantern::jack_o_lantern::jack_o_lantern:

:drinkers:

Ironically, Lowe’s has more Halloween stuff out than other stores right now. I don’t even want to mention Costco who has a few sitting Halloween props next to the Christmas village and light-up reindeer…

Our Spirit store has yet to open; they put the banner up this past Monday and have “opens September” asd the only info for the store. Other Spirit stores around my state have been open since August though, based on the website. Getting anxious… I love my yearly Spirit store trips in the fall.

Oh geez, you can’t be serious! Some of the kids aren’t even back in school yet around here!

Wish I was kidding. They had more Christmas stuff up than halloween, including a few village houses that were playing music and a new toy section… in mid August… So far only Lowe’s isn’t afraid of setting up the 10-foot tall mummy Halloween prop and scary clown circus. Guess I’ll be frequenting the garden section until Spirit decides to open

You and me both. I have two burlap scarecrow masks from the Grim Stitch Factory, and have a new costume in progress for another one.

Bro wtf is this??? :joy:

Yeah, I was going to pick up a TOTS78 and try my hand at rehauling it, until I saw that this is what I was up against. Lol. Uh, no thanks.

And they’re all HUGE. Like, comically large.

That is a pretty defective copy, yikes. Not the biggest fan of this mask to begin with, but that nose and mouth are all sorts of messed up. They aren’t normally like that, at least not the two copies I have.

I noticed that with the copies I’ve seen this year in Spirit. My pre-order copy from a couple years ago was huge, but last year I found significantly smaller copies. Yes it’s true, much like the H18 there are smaller and larger copies of this mask for whatever reason.

If I get time later I will take a couple photos wearing both the large one and the smaller one and you will absolutely see the difference. Still, not the best mask, especially stock. Rehauls make it better, but still not my favorite sculpt Justin has done.

That’s how I feel too bud. The large nose & profile ruin it for me. Still much better than the old Cinema Secrets (and all the others) though lol

I’d love to see photos of each worn for comparison if you get the time.

Here you go. First set of photos are the larger copy. Second set of photos are the smaller copy. You can see how much tighter it is on my face. Also you can see the gap between my face and the mask in the eye holes on the larger copy.

Mask doesn’t look terrible, and if you light it right its decent enough. Still, not my favorite by any means. The nose is too big and the profile is off. But that copy he posted above is clearly defective. But there is definitely smaller and larger copies out there. One of these weird issues with TOTS masks that continues to be a thing.

Larger mask: Note the gap between my face and the mask in the eye holes.

Smaller mask: You can see right away how much tighter it fits my face. Also no gap with this one, it’s skin tight.
