Straight from Carpenter’s mouth about Ends

I don’t think it’s a good sign if anyone is comparing these three films to Star Trek: Picard lol; though I always felt that this trilogy was following in the footsteps of other soft re-boots/continuation in recent years (some that came before, some after) like the Star Wars sequel trilogy, the last two Terminator films, the newest Texas Chainsaw Massacre film, Picard, re-boots to classic cartoons like He-Man, Thundercats, Voltron, Animaniacs, Duck Tales, Rescue Rangers, etc. They all rely heavily on nostalgia to hook you in then try to add their own touches that by and large don’t pan out. I think Top Gun: Maverick is the only one of these types of re-boots/soft re-boots/late sequels from this current trend (so discounting Rambo 4 and Rocky Balboa, both of which came out roughly 15 years ago) that was universally loved.
The Halloween soft re-boot trilogy unfortunately seems to be going the same route as the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Release an initial film that relies heavily on nostalgia bait (returning actors and crew members, “props”, and references) and by and large plays things pretty safe though feeling different than the classics due to the different key crew members; then comes the second movie that takes a turn, divides the fanbase, kills off some fan favorites, and hurts anticipation for the third. The third movie in each had a change of plans, Star Wars’ third sequel trilogy entry had its’ screenwriter and director sacked due to the negative feedback on the second entry and instead brought back the writer and director of its’ first entry; Ends during production of Kills when they were going to be shot back to back and in film continuity end up taking place on the same night, changed course and instead was shot later, with the film to be taking place four years later. Now you can only hope Ends isn’t a crapshow like Rise of Skywalker was, but much like that film coming off of The Last Jedi, if it were it’d only be a lateral move from Kills.

You bring up a great point. As a fan of both Star Wars and Halloween, I feel the same way about this trilogy as I did about the Star Wars sequel trilogy…they simply aren’t necessary. I always felt that the true story of Star Wars (which is essentially the story of Darth Vader) was wrapped up nicely in 2005 with Revenge Of The Sith, thus making more films unnecessary…the story was told. Halloween on the other hand, has just been needlessly milked to death for years, long before this new trilogy came along. Unfortunately, both franchises have sadly fallen victim to this new trend of relying purely on nostalgia for new films instead of actually making something new and original. To make matters worse, I’m already seeing people on Reddit talking about what they should make after Halloween Ends, including tv shows…I wish they would just let it rest.

I disagree on the sense of Halloween 2018. It’s a good mirror to the original. But God, almighty, Kills and Ends were not necessary. Halloween 2 from 1981 and 2018 are the singularly best sequels in Halloween regarding Michael Myers. Unfortunately, the comedy of Halloween 2018 takes away from the realism that was present in 1978’s Halloween and makes it just another slasher movie as we know today. It’s a good mirror… but it’s a modern mirror, with all the smudges and cracks that come with it.

I don’t trust Carpenter’s word in saying that Halloween Ends will be good. The director of the most recent Predator film said the same thing about his film and look where that ended up. Even if someone was involved in the original, don’t let nostalgia blind oneself to them saying things for money’s sake. Carpenter’s always made it clear that Halloween was always meant to be one and done, and then an anthology. Plain, simple, etc. Which then begs the question… why do people get excited about a new Myers film if it’s telling needless story? Halloween 2018 did just fine on its own. Wish it was a tighter story that focused on Michael stalking some new victims and Laurie Strode comes to hunt him, but you know what? It did just fine for the story it was trying to tell.

My theory (based on less than little) is that the studio pushed for Kills… I suspect DGG and DMcB had an idea for 2018 and Ends and the studio said, “why not a trilogy?” Again, this is just my theory, but let’s be honest, Kills was unnecessary in almost every way.

I think this “departure” from the formula was perhaps what got JLC and JC interested in making these films in the first place. I don’t think either of them would have been interested in being a part of another re-hash.

Like Patrick Stewart reprising his role for Picard… he was approached countless times over the years and pitched numerous ideas, none of which felt like a new take. He declined over and over until someone came up with an idea that felt fresh and gave him more nuance to explore in the character of Jean-Luc. I seriously think this was the case here, too. I think this “departure” is exactly why JLC and JC agreed to be a part of these films. I don’t see this as a bad thing at all, and I don’t think the actors or director or writers are dreading the release of this film. I think they’re taking a calculated risk and hoping people enjoy it.

but they wont enjoy it…good or bad this is not the thing to do for the last halloween film (if all the rumors and leaks are true), I will say though i am glad you are on board we do need fans like us who will atleast give it an open mind shot and WANT to like it…theres split people man…you got people who love it…we dont gotta worry about them…we got people though who hate them and SAY they will watch it…and they will watch it…but they already hate it lol…then theres me…pretty much like every halloween movie for ONE reason or another…Or the person who ilterally goes film by film…some loved 18 and hated kills…maybe they will love ends

Im saying that giant rant to say this…If I were the studios i would totally play it safe…have your twist…another killer…whatever…but this has to be michael myers stalking and killing until their ending…I dont get how it can be anything else…

The sequels for Star Wars always started off great, but just got worse and worse, hell Kylo Ren is really the only reason for their success, and it’s really his story, if you watch the 3 films in reverse, cut out the Nostalgia bait and the useless character Rey, it’s basically Ben turning to the Dark side
