Stripping Paint Off Of A TOTS Mask?

Hi Everyone. Like the title says, I’m wondering what the best option might be. I have a TOTS Kirk I want to overhaul but when I was going to simply take a little hair off of the sideburns to make them more slender I ended up taking some of the paint off with it which I actually didn’t want to do. Well at that point I figured I would strip it down and give it a darker flesh tone and rehair it with crepe wool preferably.
Input would be greatly appreciated. Have a good evening everyone.

I don’t know much about the other masks but I did do some research and found that for the ToTs 2018 by using a cotton tip nail and a dremel, you can peel off the paint. Maybe you can do it to other masks but I honestly don’t know.

The exact same thing happened to me!! It’s a pain in the ass!!! Seriously man, I threw the mask away twice bc it was such a pain! I eventually got most off but you will probably have some spots that just don’t come off. You may be better off just putting some liquid latex in that one spot that came off. Mine did the same thing at the sideburn area when pulling off the hair

Thanks for the ideas both of you. I will see what I can do to strip it down to a blank and work it back up! :grinning:

I started on the back with a dremel, then peeled it slowly from that spot. Very time consuming.

Has anyone shot video on how to remove the paint with a dremel and felt tip? Do you need to dial in a certain speed so you just remove paint and don’t burn the latex? I’m a dentist and have access to a variable speed electric handpiece with tons of different attachments, including all sorts of felt wheels. If I had a mask right now I would test out, but I just sent my H18 TOTS mask off to Remezap86 for a high end rehaul.

WHT exactly are you taking about? Is it a cotton tip made for nails? Could yiu post a link? I attempted to paint my mask and it sucks so I need to strip it again. So I’m gonna buy a dremel

What dremel bit did you use?

I saw a video guide on how to get the costume pieces for the 2018 Michael and he said that’s what he used

My suggestion is to used fine grit sand paper and smooth out the TOTS paint job. Be careful not to lose the cracks and ageing details.

I’m in the process of stripping the paint off a TOTS Kirk. I’m using a Dremel and it’s time consuming and messy. The front of the mask is stripped. I’m working on the back. I might leave the original paint under where the hair goes. It won’t be seen anyway.

Soaking masks for 48 hours can help and if you can get a small piece of paint to peel off,you should be good unless the paint is too thin
