Suggestions for Repairing a MM mask

Hi All,

I was going through some boxes and found finally found my 98 Don Post MM mask. I’m really sad to say that it is in need of some major repair as it wasn’t stored properly. I found the mask folded in half and the latex had stuck together and it has some holes. The hair, sides, back and forehead are still OK however the nose and lips are not too good.

Any recommendations or suggestions for repair or is this something that should be tossed? I’ll post a few pictures shortly if it would help.

Thanks in advance.

DJ

Assuming you’ve gotten the mask unstuck…Grab a Shatner lifemask, the type used to make the original ‘75 Kirk sculpt. I know eBay has them, iOffer probably does as well, as should websites. Place the lifemask flush in the mask so everything lines up properly, then stuff the mask with plastic bags with the lifemask flush and leave it that way for a day or two and your mask will gain its’ shape back. As for the holes that’s a bit different, you’d need mask latex and a lot of time to practice making repairs flush with the areas around it.

Stuffing it with something to help get the shape back is always a good thing to do. Before you do that you might want to put some baby powder all over the inside of the mask so it wont stick to whatever you use to stuff it or back to itself. You can use latex caulking to fill in some of the small holes and more than likely after all that it would need to be repainted. Honestly if the nose, lips, and other parts are that bad it might be worth it to just pick up another mask. But on the other hand its always fun fixing things yourself
