just wanted to continue on from the thread started by "“shape_78"” about H40 should it have been a direct sequel to H1 or H2.
Now the main complaint about H2 is the brother/sister idea, and I am assuming this is why BH skipped H2 altogether. However, what if H2 never mentioned the brother/sister thing at all…Do you then think that H40 would have then been a direct follow up from H2, or do you think they would have still skipped it anyway?
Also, if H2 did indeed never mention the brother/sister idea, would you like to have seen BH continue on from H2, or would you have still preferred them to skip it and just continue on from H1 no matter what?
I think it’s more of a Carpenter thing than a Blumhouse thing. John has stated that he hates Halloween 2, I believe he called it an atrocity. And he also has said that he regrets the brother sister angle that he wrote, he just did it out of writers block because he didn’t want a sequel. If that had never happened I’m almost positive they would of kept H2 canon. I love H2 but it didn’t bother me that they were doing away with it because I was never a fan of the brother sister thing.
Having said that though it’s kind of pointless since this is essentially going to be a trilogy of Michael going after Laurie. Why is Michael going after Laurie if they’re not related? Doesn’t make much sense
I’m all for H40 being a sequel to H2, but the brother sister thing isn’t the only issue they’d have to address…there’s also the fact that Michael was supposed to have been killed off for good at the end in the hospital explosion, so they would have to address that as well. Overall, the reason I feel H40 should have followed H2 is because not only was it the same night as 78, but the hospital massacre only adds to Michael’s status as this legendary murderer, and on top of that, it also makes Laurie’s trauma and Rambo-like persona a lot more believable.
I agree with these points and like I said before in really don’t believe the brother sister thing is why they made the new movie a direct sequel to Halloween. It was done because it is much easier to explain what happened to Myers and they didn’t have to use their brains and actually think of a creative way to bring the character back after part 2.hence this B.S. they tried to sell about wanting to make Myers more humanized again etc…are they joking? HE’S THE BOOGEYMAN. THE CREATOR OF THE CHARACTER HIMSELF SAID THE SHAPE WAS A SUPERNATURAL FORCE and these two clowns want to make him a regular guy . How many times can the same franchise be repeatedly ruined over and over ?
I’m not sure what the point of continuing from H2 and having them still be siblings would be. H4 & H20 were both direct sequels to H2 with the sibling angle, so that has been done. Even RZ stuck with the sibling angle. I think in many films the family relative became a hindrance more than anything. Also, no one could have survived the damage he took from parts 1 & 2, so it’s kind of silly that he is this unstoppable killing machine. He may as well be Jason. If it’s something you can’t fight, then it’s just an inevitability that he will succeed because there is no way to stop him. I don’t find that scary. I prefer that he just be some crazy lunatic that can be stopped, with a hint of the supernatural, not simply unkillable.
And at least H18 was a breath of fresh air. No one has done a sequel yet where they weren’t siblings (except maybe for H3?). There are 8 movies where they are, so it was well overdue to try a different approach, imo.
Then the next question should be which do you think is a better movie? H2 or H40. Forget about what makes a better sequel ,just which movie is better in general and H2 gets my vote for that…
I think the real problem with H2 is that Laurie, the protagonist, was asleep for half the film. Carpenter said that was a mistake. Curtis even admitted that she was confused as to why she didn’t get to do much in the sequel. Despite that though, I don’t think either film is necessarily “better” than the other. They are two totally different beasts, which serve as two completely opposing sequels to the original, and not really comparable. One was filmed in 1981 and the other in 2017/18. There are HUGE differences between 40 years of film-making. I feel that the story for H18 is tighter and more focused, and the characters felt better developed, imo. On the flip-side, H2 had Cundey, Pleasence, Hill, Carpenter, etc. It’s difficult not to like part 2, despite the flaws. I think the only real question is which film you prefer? There is no way one is better than the other.
My opinion is that The brother/sister motive just watered Myers down. Glad they ignored all the sequels because compared to the first film they don’t even compare. I like that they made Myers scary again in h40 by making him more believable, as in someone who could actually exist in the real world. This could actually be a real serial killer. THAT is scary. I think with the sequels, it slowly turned Myers into a parody. He was more like Jason after the first film. An unstoppable zombie with an ever changing mask. I like h40 as a direct sequel to the first film also because it took the best bits of what we saw in Myers in the sequels. Ie the brutality, strength etc…
Ok so carrying a tombstone from a cemetery to a car then up a flight of stairs of a house that weighs about 100 lbs undetected , getting shot 6 times , falling off a balcony and walking away is believable? That’s human characteristics? Lol
