Greetings comrades. An interesting question, one that ought to be discussed, recently came to mind. If you ask any random man who his idol, hero, or someone he looks up to is, he will most likely give you an answer along the lines of “my father”, or perhaps a superhero. Point being is that most people adore hero’s instead of villains. Now on to my question: What is it that brings YOU to adore The Boogeyman, Michael Myers? Most of you have posters, film memorabilia, and masks that replicate the on-screen terrors that occur throughout the HalloweeN franchise. Many of you are die-hard collectors and such. So, what is it exactly about the mystery that is Michael Myers that fascinates YOU?
I enjoy the film. I don’t idolize Myers. I can easily separate fiction from reality, and HALLOWEEN is just a film I really like. In fact, it is my favorite film.
I love dressing up as Myers, but I have never, nor will I ever look at him as my idol.
I think that for the most part, we’re all intrigued by what we don’t understand, and Michael is an exact example of such. For us, it’s impossible to fathom such an absence of right and wrong, and remorse. And that’s why we love him the way we do. He is the dark, animalistic part of all of us that we wish we could exploit, but know better than. The documentary on Ed Gein in the special features of 2003 TCM explains this really well. And let’s face it, the mask is f***in’ awesome!
I agree with the others above,It is my favorite movie and the hobby is extremely fun.Ive always loved Michael Myers as a character in the movie but of course would never try to act like him lol but I do like to dress up as him and collect masks but I just think its fun.It all started when I first saw Halloween when I was 4 years old and I was hooked on the series and it opened me up to the whole horror genre.I guess Im just fascinated about it because hes so silent and mysterious and that white blank mask, you never forget it.The story is great and hes just a normal man with a lot of rage wearing a mask, and that white blank face, its so simple yet so creepy and eerie.Overall I just love the movies and Michael and of course this awesome hobby,Ive just always been a Myers fan at heart.
I do have Idols and Myers is NOT one of them. I do not idolize Michael Myers. An Idol is someone that I strive to be like and look up to. I don’t look up to Michael Myers. However there is something that does draw us to him and Horror in general. I see two sides of this. I see the side of the art. I think most of us are very artsy kind of people and we tend to gravitate towards thigs that are different and what society deems un-acceptable. I know also for myself the art of the mask making and special effects is a HUGE draw for me. It takes a true artist to do what a lot of these people do and that is nothing less than a man who sculpts a Greek God or Picasso.
I also think all of us have a side that is dark, darker than most of us are willing to admit. We are afraid to admit it because it’s “un-acceptable” to society and deemed “wierd”. Wheather you want to admint it or not, you have it and we as horror fans have chosen to embrace it and be in touch with it, which I believe is much heathier thatn denying it. I would NEVER…let me repeat that…NEVER…one more time…NEVER do to someone what Micahel does to people. But there is a side to us all that can relate to what Michael or Jason or whoever is doing. I think of Michael and Jason as victims. They didn’t choose or ask to be this way, we all know their stories, why they are the way they are and I think they both got a raw deal like most of us feel or have felt at one time or another in life and we can relate to that. We are victims as they are wheather we are willing to admit it or not. We all have insecurities and have been made fun of, shuned or denied friendship in some way and sometimes feel like outcast, dorks, different or whatever and that’s what these movies tend to cater too. We love watching the “jerk” Jock or “popular” kids get hacked up because it’s something that we could never do in real life (at least I hope you wouldn’t), but we sure have felt like we’ve wanted to at times…tell me I’m wrong. We can live vicariously through watching a Michael or a Jason charachter take his revenge on a stupid Jock, or Popular chick becaue we know better and would never do that in our real lives. I’d say that most people that are into Horror Movies are WAY more in touch with their feelings than people would want to admit. I personally think being drawn to Michael is healthy and allows an oultlet to which we can relate. A lot of people are afraid of thier dark side and choose to say what we like and collect is bizzare, wierd or abnormal. Those people are simply just not as in touch with themselves as we are and I truly believe that.

to me myers and the halloween movies are just prue fun and enjoy collecting his masks cause theyre pretty cool looking. I would never strive to go out and kill people like myers does in the movies.
My answer is two fold…
As humans we pretty much have a grasp, an idea, some control, over most facets of life. The only gray area or final frontier for most of us is death. We will never fully know it until it happens to us, and thus far noone who has died has been able to fill us in on the mystery. Death is mystical, and it is perhaps the most sacred of all human experiences. Death does not discriminate and comes for everyone eventually. We think about it, are fascinated by it but are also afraid or cautious. Well, horror movies allow us to revel in death in all its macabre glory without any true risk. We pop in a dvd or go to the movies and two hours later we come back to reality. No harm, no foul. Now as we all know, there are countless horror films, so WHY halloween? why Myers? thats my second idea on the matter…
Halloween and Michael Myers is “americana”. Especially for those of us who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s middle america. These were the last years of true social innocence, when doors were left unlocked; when babysitters called their boyfriends over once the kids were asleep; The Boogeyman was real, he was the shape of all things that could befall harm on people, especially children. He was the stalker in the park; a drunk abusive father; a killer; a psychopath; the razor in an apple; he was the unknown force of doom, of evil. The Boogeyman was also quite simply a conscious, fear at work…“get to bed or the boogeyman will get you”. Halloween and the boogeyman are part of american mythos. This is why Myers is so dear to many of us, he is deep rooted in our psyche, even beyond the film.
Halloween brings us back to the days of childhood, the excitement of halloween, of being a kid or adolescent and all the fears and dangers that came with it. The wonder of death and the unknown are realms will like to visit and Myers is the ferryman who brings us there.
Thanks Ryan . I think way too many people are afraid of their dark side and instead of embracing it, they pretend they don’t have one because it’s not “pc” and we’ve been told since we were children that it’s not OK, that it’s not normal, but we’re all wired that way to some extent. So in turn some people say things to us like we’re strange or weird or have emotional problems because we choose to express our dark side’s in a positive way. Joke is on them because we’re the one’s in touch with ourselves…they are the people struggling with emotional and personal identity issues. Nick
