The Halloween II BACKUP MASKS

Hi everyone, its me back here again for another thread. Hopefully i’m not getting annoying or anything, as i’ve just recently started writing posts on here.

To start this off, i’m not too sure if everyone on here is aware of these masks, as most people are just familiar with the original hero, and the other two stunt masks from Halloween 1978 that also made it into the 1981 sequel. So i’m gonna try my best to introduce what i’m talking about.

Background
For those of you who don’t know, Rob and Kathy Tharp are former Don Post employees that were actually involved with the production of Halloween 2 (1981). When Rob was asked, he said he recalled making two Ben Tramer masks (As seen in the movie) and 3 backup “Myers” masks. There’s also talk of a backup Kirk that made it onto set of Halloween 4 as Ken Horn claims, however i’m not sure if I should believe that claim or not.

Backup masks
While the 3 backup masks were made for the movie, they were (seemingly) never used for any filming. Apparently, 2 of these masks are actually still around today. Here they are (I believe)

If anyone could share some more light on all of these, that would be great. Not much is known about these. Feel free to correct me if i’m wrong about this stuff too. That’s really all I have to say, thanks for reading :myers:

PS: I actually plan to get some replicas of these masks, so if anyone is willing to share more references of these for me, please do!

Wow, very cool! I wasn’t aware of these masks, so thank you for posting! I hope those with more knowledge can shed some light on all these masks

Ghostlyshape and Kirk magnum will be able to chime in as well as Kaizu and Jay himself, I’d like to know more about the last one

There’s never been any proof that the three listed are actual masks having anything to do with H2. Or really even that they made backup “myers” masks.

The first is Matt Garrets old kirk who got it by asking his mother to call DPS and get a mask “like the one in HalloweeN 2” since their name is in the credits, so it’s not an H2 backup.

As far as Billy’s goes he would have to chime in. I’m unfamiliar with the backstory on his copy but I don’t believe it’s any type of H2 backup mask or at least I haven’t heard that.

The third copy shown is known as “The Basement Kirk”, AKA the “Steve Patino Kirk”. Attached is a photo of him supposedly selling the mask, which also leads me to believe that it’s not a backup mask from H2. Also if memory serves me correct the guy that owned it and had it displayed as a backup H2 mask was shady, so I’d take that plaque with a grain of salt! Lol.

Thank you so much for the info, I removed the first mask as I double checked with a few things and turns out somewhere along my research on of the sources ended up making a false claim. I’m not too sure about the second Jay Allan kirk, I was hoping he’d reply to shed some light onto it. I don’t think he’d make things up about it though. Who knows.

Oh no! I’m not saying Jay would make anything up, in fact he hasn’t. It’s the original owner I was referring to who was less than honest about what it was.

Ahhh ok! I completely misread your previous reply.

Backup #2 (is that as it appears today??) Would have been nice to see on screen as it’s still “clean” and would have matched up better for continuity purposes if nothing else.

It isn’t a backup mask that we know of, sadly :frowning:

Hey guys. I just stumbled upon this thread now. I have a couple more pics of it from way back. The story i was told was this mask was a extra mask from Halloween 2. Steve Patino said he got the mask from John Carpenter in 1986 when he worked with him on the set of PRINCE OF DARKNESS. This mask was obtained from Steve Patinos estate sale after he died in 1994. I wanted to figure out the truth so I got in touch with Carpenter. I asked him about this and he said “i dont remember if I gave him a mask but I remember Steve Patino” . Steve did also work at Don Post for 2 years so he could of just made himself it which would make more sense but who knows. The one in the pic at the convention I dont feel is my mask

Great post. H2 mask so mean looking I really need to get one

Great thread!
The only valid info I could share is that Dick had told me in emails that there were a few “Kirks”, the Tramers and the stunt mask(s) from H1.
In the commentary track for the first release Anchor Bay DVD for H4 the screenplay writer states they had a leftover mask from H2 which I assume is the unconverted “Kirk” Dick had mentioned in emails seen in the school scene.

I just assume these mystery Myers that surface were converted Kirks sold off as H2 back ups for a good buck under the table. Nevertheless they’re still real pulls from a 75 mold so in no way does such fake info(if this is true) devalue the masks.
