Did a quick mock up in photoshop. I’m off a bit on the shape but it’s close enough to get a good feel what eye cuts do for a mask. Angle of the hero is a bit different than your Pic Billy as is the stuffing but you get the idea. I would never post a comparison pic of this nature of someone’s mask but after I heard you’re getting the eyes reworked I didn’t think you’d mind.
I personally do realize eye cuts are very important to a mask.In fact, they are the second thing I look at.I am a sculpt fanatic and tend to pay more attention to sculpt initially. Now,with that said,I did not originally think much of the eyes being smaller.I thought it gave the mask a different look for sure, but it wasn’t something that was killing me.However, after analyzing it over the past couple threads,I agree that my copy could absolutely benefit from the eye cuts being opened up.Saying that,I still hold my position that the mask looks incredible worn, especially in the pics Billy took recently.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion and it is obvious by the lack of commentary in most HMK threads, that the jury is out on this mask.I suppose it is from how the process went and people want to try to really pick the mask apart. So,everyone is free to have an opinion, but to think that this mask is “off” in any way other than the eye cuts maybe,is almost fundamentally incorrect.Sure, everyone sees masks differently, but match up the details of the Hero and the HMK in the pics that Billy posted where he has it stretched in the same fashion as the compared Hero pic.The nose, every little indentation is there. There is no way to deny that, unless you are truly trying to put a negative spin on the mask with some venom behind it.That is the bottom line.
Thanks for this intriguing post,Billy.I always felt that the mask was just being worn a bit differently.Listen,I generally have a 23.5 inch head around.24 inch masks usually fit me perfectly and when I am thinner a 23.5 is perfect.I met Nick Castle and both Jimmy(Shape1188) and I agreed that next to our heads, which we consider large,Nick does NOT have a big head at all.His nose is a tad on the long side and his face certainly has a bit of a unique V shape in general, but he does not have a large head by any stretch of the imagination.
Great post Billy!
As with any cool Myers there’s bound to be some drama, comes with the territory.
The HMK definitely has potential, would love to see one of these Kirks perfectly converted.
Kinda bummed,I missed out on this one.
fantastic read…ive always wanted a lifecast of his face to make a accurate head to display a mask on. as far as the eyes, thats a touchy subject as to weather they were more opend up or not. many pics i see the small trace of the “lip” under both eyes. but at the same time when most replicas are made and the “lip” is left there when the artist cut the eyes(including myself) it looks oddly smaller that what you are trying to achieve.
Billy, take some polly batting and put some near your temples when you wear it. it seems to make them more of the “screen used” size as opposed to what we hardly see at all, which is the mask not on someones head. ive also learned to stuff the sides of the neck, this pulls the eyes at the downward angle slightly giving them the nice oval droopy look. around the back of the ear area right were your neck begins.
almost to many variables to get the correct look from any mask…as stated a million times over, its all in the eye of the beholder as to what YOUR version of the Hero looks like. that is untill we get a real 75 kirk to have a go at
Thanks for bumping this, this is a great informative read! It seems like Nick Castle has the same issue as I with masks, not being able to pull it under the chin comfortably. I would have never guessed he wore it like that! It gives me hope lol I’m going to have to try this now, maybe some smaller masks will work out for me now…damn long face!! I know masks sit on display the majority of their lives but I want to be able to wear it correctly too if need be…Great thread Kirk Magnum, I need to search a bunch of old threads for great information now!
I know for a fact that Tommy Lee was in the myers costume for the closet scene. I heard him say that basically it was established that anytime there was a scene where Michael had to break a prop or cause some sort of damage to the set, he would suit up to do those scenes, because he knew how to break them and where to hit, so other than the closet scene, I assume he also did the scene where he busts his hand through the door to unlock it from the other side as Laurie tries to open the door to escape the house in the final chase scene.
That would’ve been really interesting to see him in H2, but he said he just couldn’t bring himself to return for the sequel because he felt they truly did it with H1. Another thing that’s pretty interesting is that pretty much everyone who wore the suit in H1, the mask fit them in pretty much the same way, so you couldn’t tell who it was, unlike H2 where dick warlock gave the mask a stretched out wider look.
This is one reason I think masks with a built in “pull” are already flawed. I get that people want to look like the original, but if your face isn’t the same it’s not going to look right anyway, so why distort the mask?
That’s cool, I actually thought it was Castle that jumps onto the car (obviously Tommy broke the window though) and I also didn’t know TLW did the Hallway stab scene
