I guess you can call it both ways. Nick Castle did not like the mask he wore in the movie Halloween.
“The mask was latex and fit really snug on my face. I have sort of a long face and the mask we used certainty did fit exactly the way it was supposed to.”
-Nick Castle
With the mask being extremely snug and very uncomfortable to wear due the heat staying within the mask, you can see why Nick wore it in the photos. If you look at the times Nick is wearing it, you can notice the round “chin” area on the mask being out there–because his chin is not inside that area, it’s sitting in the bottom area behind the chin–the mask being pulled making indention’s near the mouth area, left and right; sometimes creating a smirk while other times a frown, the nose and mouth area kinda going to the left and the whole mask in general being in a “V” pattern from the chin to the top of the mask; when looking at it straight on. Part of the “V” pattern is from Nick’s big bushy curly hair too, that pushes out of the top part of the mask widening it at the temple area.
So in my opinion, Nick had that pull going the whole time; not just in some scenes, but every scene he wore the mask. Nick dosen’t have his mouth open, he simply is wearing the mask giving it that pull or stretch.
When Tommy Lee is wearing the mask, Tommy has his entire face within the mask–his chin is inside the chin area in the mask–giving the mask a full face look. The same as with Dick Warlock, his face is fully inside the mask.
Now, I spent a lot of time scanning these photos, shrinking them and putting a smaller res size so people don’t just steal them and put them up on Facebook without acknowledgment. If you’re going to do that, please gimme me some credit; remember some of these photos were not cheep originally.
Billy trying the Nick Castle pull…
I need to get the eyes re-adjusted on my mask but I found my grail.
Another great little read, Billy. I was waiting for this one. THANK-you for posting.
Now I gotta say, I’ve done this with some of my masks many times, and it certainly makes sense that that was what Castle was doing. Thanks again!
Yet more astounding info and such great info to know
but my question is where do you get all this information from
it seems like you personally worked with these guys
Like others have stated, I too have worn my mask that way. Even the slightest variant in how you wear a Myers mask can make it look different. I guess that is one of the many reasons that mask is such an enigma. Cool pics & post.
Yunno’ i have to say very interesting Billy about how you describe Nick wore the mask, that thought never occured to me i like many others just had the assumption he was pulling different faces within the mask after all he seemed to enjoy a face pull or two, just from screen caps of him without the mask you can see these funny faces he pulls and the needle in the neck cap, his eyes within the mask for me are very humourous.
I don’t know where you get all this interesting info but I appreciate reading it. Is it no wonder people have such a hard time trying to sculpt the H-1 Hero when it took on so many different looks and shapes due to the different guys under the mask…and now it appears, wearing techniques. That is what I love about the HMK’s. It’s a press off a Mint 75 Kirk and that’s the base you need if you want your mask to morph from Nick, Tommy, or Dick. Every detail is in there so there’s no second guessing if the mask maker got the dimensions correct.
Aside from the eye cuts, your worn shots are on the money Billy. Everything else is perfect.
I sure hope it doesn’t sound like I’m bashing Bry’s finishing techniques. I am so impressed by his work on my copy that I will be going through him for any future blanks I decide to pick up. Just about all Myers I’ve owned had problems with the eye cuts. The Psycho had good cuts but they are too far from the eye brows. The DB had an assortment of problems but the likeness of the sculpt was so good you almost overlooked them, and the list goes on. Justin came very close on the original NMM78’s and that’s probably the best I’ve seen in person. Whoever says Myers eye cutting isn’t critical to achieving a “movie mask look” simply doesn’t understand the process. Eye cuts next to the sculpt are the single most important part of the look.
Billy, I’m not trying to rain on your little parade here. BUT your mask nor does the HMK in general capture the look of the H1. I understand it is a pressing of the '75 Kirk but something isn’t right. With all due respect, you only show 1 photo of YOUR mask in this post. The rest are of the original mask. I see no resembelence, even with your theroy rendered. I need to see more shots and from different angles … not just 1 front shot photo of your mask and comparing it to all these BHTS photos that you exclusively released. SORRY but again, it just doesnt cut the flesh with me. Until, i see more shots of this mask and in costume, and under various lighting conditions, then and only then will i make a final disposition on this. I’m not trying to flame here or anything so before anyone gets their blood pressure up, relax … just honestly not seeing anything special about this mask. I want to see this mask in it’s true potential, if it even has any … from what i see now though with the photos you have posted of YOUR mask, it is lacking in a serious degree.
Again, My opinion … Sorry if you guys don’t like it.
Being a costume nut myself, Billy’s theory of where Nick puts his chin is very obvious in the phone scene.
No way does he has his chin in the chin area of the mask.
From comparing his head size with others from recent con pics, you can tell that his head is very long and large…Larger than I though.lol
I often see sculpts being sculpted incorrectly with a double chin which in fact was actually Nick’s chin causing the mask to look like this in certain screen caps.
Glad you posted this Billy.
Horrorfan, everyone has their own vision of the Hero mask and it’s a very opinionated matter. Looking at the Hero’s condition in the Sean Clark video 10 or so years back it was hard to see the Castle look the mask took on in the movie…and the mask was in pretty decent shape at the time. Stretched over the mannequin head it completely altered the look. I shot a quick video today to show a completely different look the HMK can take on. A mix between the H-2 mirror scene and the H4 cover. Exactly what I asked for from Bry. This helps to show the range of the mask compared to Billy’s stretch. Like I said, everyone has their own vision of Myers but the detail and look this mask has in person is like nothing else I’ve owned and I’ve owned pretty much everything.
If you listen really hard you can hear my parrot say “Burt Reynolds” in the background…that’s his name lol
Nick Castle seems like he has a big nose.
If he had put his face full into the mask, maybe it would have protruded the mask’s nose out more. Like the H5 mask with the nose extention.
Until, i see more shots of this mask and in costume, and under various lighting conditions, then and only then will i make a final disposition on this.
You better get to work, BK. Don’t keep this guy waiting.
Yeah, come on like your buddy said … Get to work! I want to see what this mask can do. Actually anyone that owns one of these … post costume pictures. Let’s see 'em … It is the BEST isn’t it?
I agree Benny, the only thing slightly lacking for me is the eyecuts and like someone stated earlier they are a crucial part for pulling something that is Hero intended off well and basically can make or break a mask sometimes but with a little work on resizing and shaping them’ this mask will be a tough competitor beyond any doubt.
Thanks guys, but again I really don’t want this to be about the HMK/MCS mask, it’s about Nick Castle wearing the mask…woops, I mean the “GRAIL”!
All I tried to do is try it myself with the HMK/MCS…it’s the only Halloween 1 Myers mask I have. I guess I should have tried it with my Creature from the Black Lagoon mask; slap some white paint on that sucker and some hair…poof, a perfect Myer mask.
