Unless someone has made one already I’d say we need this, no? Not here yet but around the corner. I know we already know what to expect but how good will these be? How many of these features are brand new to these versions? Will this 4k version of H1 outshine the previous standard one? Only additional thought I have right now is based on the description I read, it sounds like no closed captions for this? Surely this can’t be right…?
I’m just hoping for either strict theatrical color timing. Supposedly Halloween will have both a disk with the original color timing and one with tweaked color timing. If they do any tweaking the main one I’d love to see is using modern color correction to make leaves and foliage look like autumn (and doing something about the palm trees if that happens). Not shooting in autumn (preferably in the midwest) and not having enough lights to do the lighting they wanted (blue lights in particular) seem to be Carpenter and the team’s main regrets in the way the film looks, so it’d be cool to see a disk devoted to that. Honestly seeing all of the entries with a disk made to have them look like autumn in the midwest would be great. One for the original theatrical look, one for a true to autumn look. Halloween 6 is the only entry until Halloween Kills in a series of (until Kills) 11 films about the most autumn of autumn days that was shot in autumn. Friday the 13th has more entries that were shot in autumn (chunks of 1, 2, 4, all of 5, small bits of 7, and 9 shot until early September which is close but no cigar) and that was intended as a summer time series.
I’m also hoping for high bit rates, great audio and video encodes and both the original theatrical audio presentations as well as a modern DTS X or Dolby Atmos style surround sound mix.
After the A/V presentation the extras are the icing on the cake. I’m just hoping for some new things for 4 and 5 which haven’t seen a truly new release since 2004 or 2005 when the Divimax dvd hit (since the current blu-rays of 4 and 5 are based on those dvd releases).
I wonder if the “broadcast television cut” of Halloween will be the version with the inserts that are not present on the current DVDs of the TV cut? What I mean is, on the original NBC broadcast, there were inserts that they removed on the “Extended Edition” of Halloween VHS, DVD, etc.
The only thing that actually had this were the old Limited Edition Orange tapes set, which I have. Here is my set, and a screenshot of an insert that is not in current versions of the TV cut:
That would be neat if it’s the true original NBC cut.
Also, very happy to see we are finally getting these deleted scenes that were found for H5. Finally get to put that to rest. Looking forward to seeing that. Horrible movie, but always been curious about those scenes.
For those wondering, 4&5 will include their original audio tracks (first release since 1999), with a bit of a catch. 4’s had to be sourced from the Laserdisc for 2.0 and the 1999 DVD for the 5.1 (so not lossless), but 5’s original 2.0 was sourced from the original mag strip. 4’s mag strip is missing according to Cliff from Shout.
Are these (H1, H2 and H3 specifically) going to look any better than the 4k versions that have already been released? Or do people feel this collection is more if a cash grab than anything else?
They should look significantly better since they’re OCN scans. Every release we’ve seen so far has been from an Interpositive (but were falsely advertised as OCN). Plus Atmos tracks should be amazing (especially 3). Plus, this is the first 4K release of 1978 to have the actual original mono track (the previous release uses a downmix of the 7.1)
Even though it’s from the Laserdisc it will be good to have a correct 2.0 for Halloween 4. Apparently it has been broken since the second DVD release, or something like that.
I know this may be a dumb question, but I’ve actually never had any 4K Blu-Ray movies before because I don’t own a proper player for them. However, I know they supposedly include a standard Blu-Ray disc version of the film, so my question is…is the standard Blu-Ray disc that’s included with the 4K disc the same as the previously released standard Blu-Ray, or has it been updated as well? I ask because I currently own the standard Blu-Ray of H4 from a few years back, the one that has the orange version of the poster on the cover.
Not sure if I’m misunderstanding what you’re saying but I have a vhs version that isn’t the orange tape that has the TV version with the 1964 title card
Actually just did some quick research and found this. This is the version I have.
1987 Media Home Entertainment version
In 1989 there was an accidentally released TV version. This version was also released by Video Treasures in 1990, just after Media went out of business. The box covers for the 1987 and 1989 Media version and the VERY rare 1990 Video Treasures TV version are very similar. They are basically the same on the front. But, on the the back, the Video treasures box has the Video Treasures symbol on the back, the Media version does not. This version is out of print and is like trying to find a needle in a haystack to find. It has been discovered that not all of the 1989 Media releases actually are the TV version. Confirmed with several e-mails, it has been determined that the regular version was released in 1989, but it wasn’t until August of 1989 that the TV version was released. The only way to verify that a 1989 version of the Media release it the TV cut is to check the date stamped on the front end to see when the tape was duplicated.
Yeah that pretty much answers the question about why some of the VHS had that cut and others didn’t. Very interesting.
I feel like a similar thing happened with the first run of DVDs. Some folks have that cut on their DVD, others just have the theatrical with tv scenes spliced in. Same DVD release, same box, but different cuts. Very weird stuff was going on with that dang TV cut back in the day lol.
