Interesting…I always thought the extra run time issue was solved with John Carpenter adding more kills, while the whole brother/sister plot was the result of him spending long drunken nights trying to come up with a reason for Michael to go after Laurie.

Ok so NBC needed it longer?? Isn’t NBC tv?? Was it planned for tv before it was out at the theatre?
NBC is a production company as well as a television station. They own Universal Studios, which made the last Halloween movie as well as Halloween 2.
So NBC is responsible for giving Michael Myers purpose to kill instead of just keeping him as purely and simply…evil. I know one of the scenes added into H78 was Loomis at the hospital and seeing “SISTER” carved into the back of Michael’s door. I guess Carpenter decided to roll with that. Made sense story wise and gave him an easy out on where to go with Halloween II even though making them siblings kind of ruined Michael’s mystique for 40 years. She never needed to be his sister and the new Halloween movie showed that them not being related is actually better. I like the notion that Laurie somewhat embodied Judith Myers in H78 and that’s why when she dropped off the key at the Myers house he decided to stalk her. He was watching and toying with her the same way a brother would with his sister. In Halloween II it’s revealed that was because they were related which made Michael far less frightening but in the new timeline it fits more with the original film and still works with the story of why he would view her as his surrogate sister in a sense yet doesn’t take away the foreboding essence of Michael Myers being The Shape who kills for reasons we don’t know or understand which makes him far more scary than the former timeline.

He wrote the plot for Halloween 2, because he couldn’t think of anything else to carry the story on from part 1.
What you’re saying is true, but only for the purpose of making H1 longer for TV; H1 had added scenes involving the sibling plot, and that was to also make it longer for TV - I believe this is what you are referring to. But it is not the reason the plotline exists, as it was done after H2 was already written.
The reason why Michael goes after Laurie is so simple… Because she dropped off the Keys at his house.
Part 2 didn’t need a sister plot. He simply was obsessed with her and wanted to finish what he tried earlier during the night.

Just to clear things up Universal Studios is a production company that has not made any Halloween movies. Halloween II was produced by The Dino De Laurentiis Corporation and Halloween 2018 by Miramax, Blumhouse, Trancas and Rough House.
Universal Pictures distributed both films but did not have a hand in making them.
Ah, my mistake, I thought they had a hand in producing.
