The Rob Zombie Reboots

I’m sure this has been discussed here before, but without dragging up an old topic, I figured I could make a discussion on the Rob Zombie reboots. What are your overall opinions of them?

Halloween (reboot) added a lot of depth to the backstory of Michael Myers I feel, which I really like. You really get an idea of what happened to him and why he ended up as crazy as he did. It wasn’t like he just put on a mask and started killing, it delved into his psyche and really told a story and at times made you feel for him.

What I didn’t like was the overly white trash parts, that could have been avoided. It just wasn’t done well, seemed stereotypical, and at times was cringeworthy. Rob Zombie definitely put his own spin on things too by having the characters be more ‘rock and roll’ and less true to the time period of the original film I feel, which is a minor complaint but not one that ruins the story for me.

Also Laurie Strode was very different in the reboots than the original.

What do you guys think of the reboot series overall?

Of the two, I enjoyed Rob’s H1 reboot more, but only because it’s inspired by the original ha ha I can’t stand his H2, just don’t know what he was thinking on that one.I agree, the white trash stuff is really unnecessary and annoying, but I don’t like that he gave Michael a back story because to me, it makes him too human, and less scary. It’s creepier in the original how there is no motive or reason behind him killing anyone, whereas giving him one just makes him a really tall guy in a mask but in the original he was the shape, if that makes any sense ha ha

I see your point for the making him too human, but that’s exactly the reason I like it actually. To me, the thing that separates Michael Myers from Jason or even Freddy, is, they both died and came back as supernatural monsters basically. Michael Myers was human, but as Dr.Loomis always put it, he was simply evil. But I liked the fact that he was human, it made everything seem more realistic, and to me that’s scarier because it could actually happen more than a Jason or Freddy coming back from the grave or in dreams.

That’s right, never thought of it that way, good point! I agree, I like that about Michael too, how it seems like it could really happen. Another thing I forgot to mention is how I prefer the way he looked in the original, as in, with him being more slim and at a normal height, makes him seem like any other guy on the street on Halloween so you don’t think much of him being a threat, but that’s what makes him so much scarier in the original in my opinion. Whereas in the reboots he’s 7 feet tall of course that’s very intimidating don’t get me wrong, I sure wouldn’t want to go up against a guy that big but basically Michael proved in the original size really doesn’t matter.

It’s ok. Typical rob zombie movie style. I prefer original 1 an 2 than the reboot. Like others say, I liked the original because there wasn’t a back story. Didn’t like the white trash aspect. Although you can see the reboot kinda bring more realistic as a huge tall guy would actually be able to pull off some of the kills etc

Interesting responses. I guess backstory isn’t a big deal to some, and can kind of ruin it for others. I just love how he took this iconic character and added more depth to him. Part two of the reboot they just went kind of insane with the whole Viking look, going a large chunk of the movie without the mask, and making Laurie a complete psychopath, but the original reboot wasn’t bad to me. The kills in the part 2 reboot though were some of the most intense kills of the franchise. Myers really killed with aggression and you could feel his pain and his anger more than most of the other kills in the series.

His Laurie is way hotter so I like that.

don’t like em, too vulgar, everyone looks like rob zombie with long hair and looks like they haven’t showed in 5 months, terrible dialog…hmm what else… Laurie doesn’t even seem like Laurie, first time I watched it I was so confused, I thought Laurie with a shy, innocent, smart girl. she seems to be the opposite of that in the remakes but they threw a pair of glasses on her to give her at least one resemblance. The movie isn’t suspenseful and neither is Michael, there’s no build up except for the backstory (witch I don’t like either, I prefer not knowing everything and leaving it up the the audiences imagination, but half of the movie is white trash backstory) Michael isn’t suspenseful like he was in the original. Last thing I don’t like is 7 foot tall Michael, I like my Michael Myers to be an average sized person and the evil that drives him gives him his strength rather than strength from being physically imposing, Don’t like the rotted mask, and in RZ h2 he doesn’t even barely wear it and he looks like rob zombie throughout the whole movie lol ughhhh

How far off Laurie and Loomis are in Rob Zombie’s H2 from the original series is probably my biggest complaint. Laurie as Mammer said isn’t even Laurie other than in name, and they change that too lol. Loomis becomes a book writer and is more after being a celebrity than stopping Myers. Those were two marquee characters, and Loomis probably the most beloved of the original series, and they completely changed both characters.

That’s true as well, I hate how they changed Loomis, such a huge disrespect to Donald Pleasance and the character.

loomis in the reboots was an absolute dick and made you really wanna see him die at the hands of myers
the original loomis you were always pulling for
i love the white trashiness and the fact myers is a massive figure
however the second one was truly one of the worst movies ive seen
the only thing good about the second one is annie

I love the 1st one , more than 2 nd , do to the fact 2nd had some fictional Horse shit, but both movies were brutal as hell.

i saw the first movie once and liked it and havnt seen it again since it first came out…think i’m gonna watch it again soon.
saw the 2nd movie and couldnt follow it-lol …i guess i’ll give that one another try too-lol
i liked the masks in both films.

I loved his reboots they were great H1 was better because he put a lot of the original touches into and I have a lot of respect for his H2 because he did his own thing with it he made H2 with all his style

The first one was pretty good as for the second one I thought it was awful!

Both of the zombie movies were good in there own way. No way they can stand up to Carpenters originals. The whole white trash theme was taken to far and the dialog was appauling(way to much swearing, made the characters seem like idiots. Hated the rape scene version of his escape, but I loved the imposing nature of Michael and his anger thruought both movies

Just to simply expain how bad the reaction was towards them “here” at the time…
The forum had a separate section where all RZ related threads would go.

I totally get what you mean but I actually miss when the RZ films had their own section. The RZ scene definitely died when it got combined with General Discussion which is a real bummer. Just my 2 cents :myers:

I agree with most of this. I could have done without the white-trash aspect for both films, and the swearing, especially in the second one was pretty ridiculous, but I also agree, Michael Myers was pretty great in both. The Viking style took some getting used to, but after seeing the movie a few times, it fit. And the anger especially in the H2 reboot was incredible. Tyler Mane really did a great job as Michael Myers.

While we didn’t get the iconic moments of the original Halloween in the reboots, we got something different, and a new generation got to see Michael Myers, which seems like a good thing to me.

Sorry about that. I didn’t want to necessarily bump old topics from years ago, but I think discussing these movies is fun. I’ve had a blast since joining.
