Ok, so here are a couple shots of my Trick or Treat Studios H20 Version 2 KNB Mask.
So with that, here we go…
Who out there would have rather seen the movie finished as is, with the original KNB mask?
And who out there says screw that and are glad they did the reshoots?
Well here is my take: I wish they would have left it alone, and went the full mile with the KNB. Now, I know most agree it is not what we think of as a classic Myers look, but in retrospect, it was more similar to a Don Post the Mask, which would have been more based in reality, as thats what he would have found in Halloween stores at that time.
So had they stuck with it, sure I would have said “what the hell is this?!” at first, but most likely would have said to myself, “well ok they just went with something more Don Post style, a bit more realistic to the times and what was found in Halloween shops at the time”. So I would have gotten over it.
I would have gotten over it, because the quality of the movie wouldn’t have been compromised. The movie has a great Halloween feel, and really captures the essence of the original. The problem is the mask changing several times, along with other topics I will touch on, kill the mood right away.
The mask changing would be one thing if it was real subtle and here then gone, but it is clearly noticeable that it changes from scene to scene. Then when we get to the cartoon mask, you just can’t take it serious anymore.
Sure, the KNB is not what we come to know and love for Myers masks, but I think it would of done its job just fine, as the movie had the suspense and story to keep that issue mum. When you have the mask changing back and forth so often, its kind of like this constant movie flaw that never goes away and just ruins the illusion of the movie.
So yes, I would have rather had them finish it out with the KNB. It just would have been a better movie. However if we say that, then we have to talk about the music. The music and score piss me off greatly, and are another contributing factor of taking you out of the movie.
Now Ottman’s score was absolutely terrible in spots, and then great in others. One notable scene is when Michael is after John and his girlfriend, and they lock themselves behind the gated door, Ottman’s score goes into a pretty cool and different sounding Myers march. But that was then replaced with Scream music.
In other spots Ottman’s score was just out there in left field, not in tune with the scene at all, but then thats also dubbed over with…DUN DUN DUN!!! Scream music!
Now don’t get me wrong, I am a Scream fan to be sure, mainly the first movie, but come on man!!! How lazy does it get!! I don’t want to hear freakin Scream music in my Halloween movie!! That has annoyed the hell out of me since seeing the movie on opening night back in the day! I came out of the theater legit pissed off they treated this movie, the big return with Jamie Lee, as a bunch of bullshit not worthy of more effort put into the sound score!! Just lazy and it sucks! I would have lived with Ottman’s score way more than having freakin Scream music throughout!
So with that said, how do you feel about these above topics? Do you wish it would have been left alone? Do you say screw that I like it how it is? Or you just don’t give two drums of monkey piss? Let me know below.
Oh and over the years, the KNB mask has really grown on me. Yes its different and odd, but damn if that isn’t what I love about it!
