Hi guys, I’m planning on picking up a TOTS Tramer and making slight changes to make it more of an H1.
But I’m not someone who knows how to use mask paint etc, so curious. First for the hair, do you buy real hair dye or is there a spray? Suggestions welcome.
Hot glue for applying hair if I remove sideburns and move it back or something else? Can I use tape along the hairline when coloring hair to avoid it running or will tape mess up the finish when I remove it?
Lastly, for weathering… Do you use a latex or acrylic paint? Thanks in advance
Hair Color Spray would probably work best for what your doing. I get spray from a local hair supply store. One trick I learned is to use an old t-shirt. Put the mask up through the neck opening of the shirt till the hair is sticking out. Then adjust the shirt around till you got the mask covered but the hair exposed. Works Great for me.
Good questions, hurrikane the hair color spay seems like a good idea. I was actually wondering the same thing, I was thinking of using acrylic paint and possibly clear coating in acrylic as well. Not exactly sure of the best practices for this type of thing, good topic.
Thanks guys! @nowonmai great conversion in your thread man, question, how would you go about adding paint without an airbrush though? Don’t have the luxury of that unfortunately
Also, is liquid latex necessary? Benefits of mixing it with paint?
You can sponge the latex paint on with some of those thick makeup sponges. Any store with a cosmetics section should have them. Airbrushing is the best way IMO but you can still achieve quality results with sponges.
And yes, liquid latex is an absolute necessity as it makes the paint flexable. Without it the basecoat wont bond to the mask and will just crack and flake off. You can do all the weathering with plain thinned acrylic though, but when you’re all done you must seal it with plastidip, otherwise you could easily mess it up or wipe it off and be back at square one.
For optimum bond make sure the blank is good and clean before you start painting. Also, wear gloves to keep any skin oil from getting on the blank once its clean.
The last, and most important thing, is to have fun.
Sorry guys I didn’t see this.
For hair use rit dye and mix with water, this is best applied with an airbrush as well. Stay an inch away from the hairline and paintbrush the hairline by hand.
Since you don’t have an airbrush, dye the hair in a bucket before you put it on. Use clear tacky glue to apply.
For paint nowonmai said it, u need to use latex paint. Mix it with water. For a sealant I use permawet by monster makers. Dilute this with water as well. Plastidip has to many solvents and if over applied will ruin the paint, it also is very inconsistent and bubbles up as well, and it totally thrashes the hair like cobwebs.
No offense but you haven’t used it enough then The spray nozzle on the can is very inconsistent. The adhesive in plastidip actually dries on the hole that it’s coming out of. Because of this, it releases C02 from the can in greater amounts than the actual product itself. This in turn causes the air bubbles which like to land right on the mask. If you overspray this crap, it will actually cause the latex to curl. I’ve ruined masks with plastidip. Its ok for your Handiboy dvd quicky mask, but its a poor quality application. I bought over 2 cases of it. I’ve sealed close to 30 masks with it, and more than 50 via permawet.
There’s a lot of ways to seal latex.
Permawet is the industry standard. You can water it down to any degree of gloss or flat you want. A little goes a long way. Get ahold of the techs @ monster makers mask supply. They will steer you in the right direction.
I picked up a can that was safe for rubber at my local Ace Hardware a few years ago to use on bungee cords. It was a flat white, and I’ve used it on a number of masks. If it’s applied lightly, it doesn’t crack. I wish I could remember the brand right now, but my can of the stuff is currently out in my shed.
