Just something that I’ve been wondering since, I’ve recently placed an order for an H5 mask from an independent artist (my first latex mask for my collection) and been planning to use it for a cosplay sometime soon. The question is how does one manage to survive a day at a con while wearing these kind of masks? Been doing a bit of extensive research on precautions and maintenance care on latex masks and to me it seemed a bit daunting. Like if you’re at a con, do y’all have to maybe stop by at a nearby restroom to grab a handful of paper towels to soak up the sweat from the inside of the mask every 30+ minutes (and by the end of the day to properly clean/powder it)? Would like to hear some other suggestions.
Yeah I just go to the restroom every once in a while and wipe up all my sweat. I think people over exaggerate how much care and maintenance you have to put into a mask. I have never powedered my masks and they’ve been fine for a year. Of course you can do it if you’re feeling cautious if you spent a lot of money for the mask but yeah just wipe your sweat and breath moisture.
On top of the above, I wear a black skintight mask under all my Myers masks, to cover the eyes. This has the added bonus of catching most of the sweat, so the mask remains mostly dry. A quick dab with a paper towel in a few hours or so should do it. Then maybe toss some cornstarch on the inside after a wipedown when you get home. Depends how long you’ve been in the mask, I say.
Honestly everybody is different. Most cons should have A/C so it shouldn’t be too hot. If you are wearing a mass-produced mask, I wouldn’t even worry about minor sweat. If it’s an expensive or older mask, you can bring paper towels and simply dab the mask interior every hour or whenever you feel yourself sweating. I don’t normally sweat under the mask at all but I know some people have that issue.
I personally wouldn’t bother even taking it off unless you really feel yourself sweating. Definitely do not powder the mask until the end of the day. Realistically, although a big part of the community, the cornstarch generally is just used to absorb excess sweat and oils. Some would argue that taking the mask on and off and getting your hand oils on the mask would be worse for it than just leaving it be.
My advice: HAVE FUN! Spend the day enjoying the convention and knowing you’re a badass Myers and don’t worry about anything at all. Unless the sweat is physically bothering you, just let it be and don’t stress it. If you worry a lot, cornstarch it when you get home but use the day to enjoy yourself brother.
As for the coveralls, what brand should I consider getting? I’m on a budget and thinking about getting one from Red Kaps, but not sure which size I should get. I’m about 5’ 6” by the way.
I use Red Kaps and quite like them. Vintage ones would be your best choices, such as Big Macs or Sears, but Red Kaps are awesome for budget.
As far as sizing, you’ll need to measure your chest around by using a fabric measuring tape. For your height, a small should do, I believe but doublecheck the sizing chart.
Get a tape measurer and measure your chest. This is the way to make sure you will get a perfect fit. Just make sure you don’t buy them in L as long is usually a better fit for people 6’1 and up
Conflicted on whether to choose size 40R or 42R, they seemed to fit my range but anyone here who owns either sizes knows the Chest and Waist Sizes on those?
