I bought a few 2018’s from Tots to practice repainting. Ive started one but im just not happy with it. I decided to paint over whats already there. Any tips for getting the right paint scheme? Same with weathering and doing the cracks? Im at a standstill with the project. Everyone on Youtube that has tutorials their work is so/so not so screen accurate… any help would be appreciated. Oh and to save time, yes I mix 50/50 paint w/ latex and I have dry brushing and weathering experience - but this mask wants to challenge me! Hah
There’s two ways you can really nail it. One is to basecoat black, and brush on a light gray coat so that only a little of the black cracks remain (likely the technique used on the movie masks, and less adeptly, on the TOTS).
OR, you can basecoat light gray, and paint in the black cracks with a very fine brush. This is more tedious, but the effect is nice and you have more control.
Once you have gotten past that part, weather with a slightly darker gray using a small brush, then raw sienna around the rotten spots, the ears, neck and tip of the nose.
Then use burnt sienna and do the base of the neck, the temples and area around the eyes and mouth.
As far as I can tell from BTS photos and experience, this seems to be how the movie masks were done. Or close to it.
Work dark to light. First paint the mask the darkest color you are going to want, and then layer on your light colors, leaving your darkest dark, all the way to your lightest light. This will allow you infinite control of your finished work.
Thanks, and best of luck! Remember, when you do the weathering/washes thin your browns waaaaaaay down with water so they’re barely perceptible when you apply. That way you have as much control as possible.
I started doing a second one, I didnt like the way the paint dried in the cracks, does anyone know what I can use to remove the paint in those areas and fix it?
Sorry to dredge up an old thread. But Im repainting my mask and had a couple questions.#1:when you say “brush on light gray coat”,is that a wash,or dry brush, etc…? #2:the light gray color you mention,is that the main skin tone?I always guessed it was an off white? Thanks
Yeah I mean to dry brush it, that will be your main “skin tone.” The guy from the movie said he used a sort of eggshell color. I used a very light gray/off white.
I finally founds a 2018 TOTS mask at my local Spirit Halloween. As I am an illustrator, I’d like to attempt to rehaul my own mask too.
What type of paint are you all using? Acrylic? Are you mixing it with latex? Or just dry brushing over the factory paint job? Ive read that it is a pain in the ass to remove the factory paint and have seen differenr methods. Thanks!
