Matt is correct, it was really converted by…

you…you…you…hahaha :butthead: :butthead:

I guess anything is possible but I saw an interview somewhere with TLW talking about how he went to the drug store grabbed an Emmitt Kelly and a Captain Kirk mask (which he converted) then showed John Carpenter both and JC went with his converted Kirk. If more masks were needed I would have thought some of the crew would have made the stunt masks. Until I get solid proof otherwise I will go with what I heard from the TLW interview. Oh and the knife used in Halloween was definitely a LAMSON :axe:

Well from what I remember, the masks were purchased at a Hollywood costume store, not a drug store. Could be wrong, though. And the masks that were retrieved that day were only possibilities, not for sure decisions. That’s why only one was purchased. They decided on the Kirk, made the customizations, then realized they needed a few more. They contacted DPS and asked to have more masks made in resemblance to the mask that had already customized. DPS, being very busy at the time, declined. However, a few employees were able to snag a Kirk from their lineup and convert it in the style of the TLW conversion.

I asked Don Post, Jr. this question back in 3/13/2008 and this is his response to the whole “Halloween” mask story. This story has been posted in countess threads so many senior members have already read this. Below is Don Post, Jr’s response.

Two people from the “Halloween” production team came to Don Post Studios in 1978; they wanted two Kirk masks cast in white with black hair. It was the busy Halloween manufacturing season and we did not have the time to custom make masks. We had a few Kirk masks available; I had someone, I can’t remember who (may have been Bill Malone or Bob Short but could have been someone else) paint over the Kirk mask white (side burns removed) and paint the hair black. After these folks left Bill Malone had another Kirk mask painted and he kept it.

The “Halloween” people said they were originally looking at a Don Post Emmett Kelly Clown mask for the role of Michael. I understand the production staff had purchased a Kelly mask along with several Kirks from Hollywood Magic (6660 Hollywood Blvd). They claim they painted those masks from Hollywood Magic to depict “The Shape” from the Movie Halloween. I suspect they did repaint whatever masks they used in the movie (Blue was added to lips and other features for photographic reasons) I suspect they used a harsh lacquer paint that attacked the latex. Because of that paint along with perspiration and the actor’s skin oil, the masks deteriorated during filming. In some scenes I can see fatigue in the cheeks as the actors face stretched the Kirk mask.

Interesting read bro. I will keep an open mind. Thanks for posting it. Mike

Go on…

Okay I get it, you think it’s lame.

Ok

i know the kind of white and brown he sprayed the mask and hair with
the mask: fish-belly white
the hair: semiglosss dark brown

I think it’s a cool Idea. Who cares if it isn’t as good as what other people can do on here, or if it looks like crap, it was converted by the guy who converted the hero! (unless you guys are right about it being DP).

I think the response you would get from him would be something like “I can appreciate what you are asking and all but if I do it for you then I will be obligated to do it for everyone else who asks” In other words have a nice day and move on.

yea, while he was cool to talk while I worked next to him, I remember the first time I met him wasn’t exactly the same story. at HH back in 07, I was going through his photos (deciding which one I wanted) when my buddy asked if I wanted to get a picture with him. I ask “hey pal, you wouldn’t mind if I get my picture taken with ya, would you?” and his exact words were and I quote, “uh…have we done business yet…?”. I responded with kind of a disgusted “well, I was deciding which photo to have you sign…” he says, “well lets talk more once we do business”. my $20 bill went back into my pocket FAST.

quite douche-ish of him, I must admit. I decided I’d never pay for his autograph as long as I go to conventions. coincidentally, a few years later when we were paired next to each other, he ended up giving me a free auto in exchange for a mask stand I gave him to display a mask on. I think he signed it along the lines of, “Scott- Thanks for propping me up!”

You are wrong, buddy
