TOTS 1978 In-Store vs Online

Hey all, I’m new to the forum and all so bear with me. I ordered my TOTS 78 mask from the website about a month ago and I’m pleased with what I’ve gotten for the given price. It definitely looks like the hero mask from the original and while it isn’t 100% accurate, I wasn’t quite ready to pay a hefty fee for an NAG or anything of that sort. However, I’ve noticed some differences between the mask I purchased online compared with the same mask I’ve seen in stores. The thing that stands out to me the most is the hair; the mask I received seems to have an extra layer of hair below the ear-holes, which can definitely be an annoyance when trying to style the hair, whilst the in-store versions appear to lack this. As I’ve tried both the masks on, it also appears that mask I bought is a bit larger than the others. I’m not sure if this is just me but I’m curious to see if anyone else on the forum has noticed these differences.

Are you sure it’s not the H4 mask?

It’s the H78 mask I can assure you lol.

Can you post a pic of what you’re trying to explain, it’ll help for comparisons?

The H1 I got from online had misted black hair, the ones I saw in Spirit yesterday didn’t.

Yep I have one from TOTS directly which is misted black, and one from Spirit which is not, as you can tell in my photo here.

Mine has the hair misted black as well. Might I ask how you styled the hair?

Well first I do have a bit of a knack for styling hair on masks. The way I did these was I held the mask upside down, really fluffed out the hair so it’s all hanging down and easy to get hairspray into the root areas.

I spray up into the hair so as to get it into the closest area to the scalp as possible without hitting the actual latex mask too awful much, then I quickly get the hair matted down and brushed over into the position I want it.

I use my hand for all of this so I don’t rip out any hair. After I get it matted down in the position I want, then I spray a little all over the surface area of the hair, and begin styling it to my preference. You only need to lightly touch the hair to do this, little bits at a time until it’s where you want it.

You may have to hit a few spots with a light mist of spray again to keep it from totally drying so you can continue to style it. Once everything is where you want it, then a final coat of hairspray all over to lock it down. You have to try and avoid letting the spray hit the latex itself. Some over spray will hit it from time to time, and you can easily wipe that off with a damp cloth with a small dab of soap. Just avoid any direct spraying to the exposed latex.

I use super freeze hair spray, which you need to work fast with, because it sets extremely fast, and once set, it’s locked down permanent. So you may want to use a light hair spray to practice a little before using the strong stuff.

Once I get my YouTube channel up and running again I will make a video tutorial on how I style mask hair. I am planning on relaunching my channel as a horror themed channel where I review horror products, movies, masks, costumes, and tips and tricks to help the casual goer get the best out of their stuff.

I will also show some tips on how to trim the areas of hair that are too long or in spots that need removed. It’s just hard to explain my methods in text format, and easier to visually show folks. So keep an eye out for that coming soon.

Awesome. Keep us updated on the channel.

One of my copies had a really low line of hair in the back as well that I bought in person from Spirit Halloween. The hair was pretty thin near the front right behind the hairline though. To the point where you could see through it and down to the actual mask itself. I ended up just ripping the last row of hair from the back and gluing it behind the first row. Then I did some styling and now it looks much better! I will probably end up folding the hairline over and gluing it to give it a more accurate look but I’m pleased with it either way.

Definitely. I am planning on having things up and running within the first couple weeks of October, in time to get some content out for the lead up to Halloween. I will be sure to let everyone know when its ready to go.
