TOTS conversion questions....

Hi all, this is my first post ever, so please forgive any breach of protocol with regard to the nature of this post. I’ve recently purchased the TOTS H2 deluxe mask and am attempting to make it an H1. Here are my questions:

  1. Why doesn’t TOTS have an H1?
  2. What is the difference between the TOTS H2 masks (H2 deluxe, Elrod, and Hospital)? Are any closer to the H1 than others, and if so, why?
  3. Is there a pattern or template for H1 eye holes?
  4. Is there a recommended substance for making the hair darker?
  5. Is there a tutorial on what I’m trying to do?

Thank you all!

Edward

The TOTS Elrod mask is def a better route to go if you want something more Halloween 1, both the H2 Deluxe and hospital masks are ground up sculpts where the elrod is a retool of a Don post kirk (All these were former nightowl masks with the H2 deluxe being the Lunatic, Hospital mask is the Maniac and the Elrod is a Psycho), there is no pre available pattern for H1 eyecuts your best bet is to repaint the mask a fleshtone and while it is still fleshtone use screen grabs to stencil out the adjusted cuts on the mask best as possible, the hair can be dyed or sprayed darker and I am sure if you jump on youtube you can find videos of people rehauling them from start to finish.

  1. TOTS didn’t have the license for H1 in the past, but apparently they’ve worked out a deal to get one.
  2. All three of these masks were based on Justin Mabry’s NightOwl Productions masks. The H2 Deluxe is the Lunatic, a mask with H2 features built directly into the sculpt. The Elrod is the Psycho, a mask that makes a great H1 or H2. This one is closest to the H1. Originally, it was to be released as the “H2 Opening Scene” mask, which was technically an H1, but Trancas told them no. The Hospital mask is the Maniac, which was based on a behind the scenes H2 photo, that eventually became the poster mask used for H4.
  3. As far as I know, there’s no template for eye cuts, but this image is commonly used for reference:

  1. The original substance used to darken the Kirk hair was “streaks and Tips”
  2. There’s no true tutorials, but you can find a ton of great information on mask making on this forum. Have fun!

You guys are awesome. I really appreciate you. Have either of you ever tried using a dremmel for the eyes?

This is my preferred eye cut reference photo:

However it is a photo of the mask on Nick’s head. So it needs to be distorted in Photoshop or similar to fit a photo of an unworn TOTS mask.

For instance, this is the reference I created for my TOTS Kirk:

I cut the eyes with curved nail scissors…

That is an AWESOME reference for eye cuts! Wish I would’ve seen this before doing my Kirk lol

I think it’s dependant on what kind of look and what kind of mask you’re working with. If the mask has a Castle stretch built into it, the worn eye cuts are better because Castle’s face stretches the eye cuts vertically.

If you’re working with a mask that will be artificially stretched, I’d go with the neutral cuts because otherwise the eye cuts will stretch too much vertically and they won’t look right

Yep. I did squish my cuts a bit vertically to compensate on the unstretched TOTS Kirk… tried to gauge it against the eyebrows and nose tip.
The eyes do indeed stretch open if the chin is pulled down. It doesn’t hurt to under-cut first and test and trim a bit more after.

Question - how do you make the cuts? Standard scissors seem to be rather large and cumbersome for the task.

Curved nail scissors are worth trying - they’re small and you can get them ‘around corners’ more easily so to speak.

What do you guys recommend for improving the eye cuts on the TOTS H2 deluxe? My goal is to turn the H2 into an H1 (as close an approximation as the mask allows and I’m capable of).

since the h2 is stretched sideways to simulate h2, I can’t imagine how that would even work as an h1 which is usually stretched down.

square and wide VS long and thin,…they’re (pretty much) completely opposite looks.

The H2 also has a slightly folded over left eye rim and droopier mouth to represent the wear on the mask by '81.
Conversely, a lot of Kirk → H2 conversions look a little bit off because they have perfect rims.

What’s the size of the Elrod? It’s pretty small if memory serves. A good bit smaller than the H2?
