I bought a TOTS economy mask at a convention, which was surprisingly cheap, like 45 bucks. So I figured I would overhaul it
Here’s the thing, I think it just looks a bit too cartoony and “fake” at the moment, hopefully it doesn’t come off as harsh, we all start somewhere and for sure I didn’t know what I was doing when rehauling my first masks.
What I can suggest is:
- pick a better skintone color next time, the one you used here is too crimson red-ish, for H1s I like to mix pink, brown and a bit of red to get a flat salmon color, for H2 I’d also do something like that except use a bit more brown to bring out some nastyness, remember, creating a gradient between base color and the skintone is very important, what you have there is very abrupt, it goes from off-white to red directly, blend the skintone gradually, throw in a bit of grey drybrushed on top.
2)use thinner paint, what I’m seeing here is that for most of the detail, you went very heavy with the paint, this results in more abrupt transitions and cartoony almost cel-shaded detail (like the circle around the needle mark)
- kind of a sequel of point 2, use makeup brushes and dry paint, after you get the base coat done, when you work on skintones and dirt, use this kind of brush with just the tiniest amount of paint on it to progressively shade your mask. Test how much paint you have on your other hand before brushing it on the mask, if done correctly, you should basically do 90% of the paintjob just with a makeup brush alone. For smaller detail, there are smaller makeup brushes, or even those small brushes made for miniature paints if necessary.
thanks, I really appreciate it. I honestly thought it looked off but I couldn’t put my finger on it
Thats not horrible, but I would recommend mixing up:
- 60% orange sherbert
- 40% brown
for the skin tone.
and you really need to work more on the neck with the graduation from skin to white.
