Iām am after some much need advice on repainting my tots Halloween Kills mask. I have painted this about 3 times now and itās really getting me down and borderline depressing me that I cant get the paint to either stay on or not crack when it does stay on.
I have watched a lot of YouTube videos but nobody really seems to tell you the whole process. Halloween is probably my favourite film of all time and I just want a mask I can display in my living room that I am proud of and when people see it I can say āI did that!ā but unfortunately so far it just isnāt working.
My first attempt looked pretty good, i used acrylics and I was pleased with it but it began to crack and come off. I then used liquitex paints and again was pretty happy but again it peeled off.
I have just brought some Tim Gore latex adhesion promoter which I used as a primer, allowed to dry and the coated with white Tim Gore Bloodline paints and left that to dry for a couple of days and when I did a dark wask over it it all just peeled off like sunburn
I am so upset now that I just canāt get it right itās really starting to get to me.
I know a lot of you guys have great success in repainting these and they look amazing, Iām not expecting mine to be on that level just something I am proud of. If anyone can help me on my way with this borderline obsessive project I would be so greatful.
Are you going over the mask with Lacquer thinner before painting? You need to strip the mask of its original sealer or almost any paint will have a hard time adhering to the latex of the mask.
As posted above, mix with liquid latex, and try lacquer thinner before to get the surface more ready to hold the paint. Most cannot strip the original paint and that is ok.
I was going straight on to the mask as is and didnāt realise there was a sealer on there, this would explain things a little thank you. I will strip this with thinners and do I then prime wth the adhesion promoter? I will have a look for liquid latex to add to the paint. I assumed the paints I was using were for latex but I guess theyāre no good on their own.
I have liquitex acrylic mediums and Bloodline adhesion promoter can they be used instead of liquid latex? If not can you recommend a brand that will work?
I appreciate your help so much guys you wouldnāt believe it but this has actually been giving me sleepless nights!
Instead of doing a wash, try dry brushing. Thereās a bit more of a learning curve to it, but you donāt have to worry about it cracking because youāre doing very thin layers, building up over the darker base coat. Also I think the kills mask is dry brushed, or at least the white layer is. Imo the scars on the mask come out better that way. Every kills copy Iāve had has had very shallow scars, making washes kinda difficult.
If youāre set on doing washes though, mix your white with liquid latex as previously stated, and make sure it is fully dried and then add your wash and wipe off very very lightly. You may even want your wash layer to dry completely (donāt mix wash with liquid latex or adhesion promoter) before wiping it off.
