TOTS mask is WILD

I finally managed to get the TOTS 1978 mask, and it’s honestly so accurate (imo). I wanna see if I can do any modifications, so I was looking for tips. For context, I’m 17 without a license or a job (don’t worry, I’m actively working on both LOL) so I can only get supplies when my parents happen to be going out and are okay with purchasing stuff for me (or for Christmas + birthday). What are some tips for basic modifications? I’m gonna use a bit of hairspray for my hair, but that’s about all I’m brave enough to do right now. (PS: sorry if I’m formatting anything wrong. I’m new to posting on the site LOL)

Here’s some pics I took of it:

They are accuarate mold wise, but they never seem to get the eyes right among other things. But thats just how it goes, as they are mass produced , cant hate on TOTS they give us great movie accurate molds but when you are a stickler for details (like a good majority of us here are), they do leave alot to be desired.
Can you give me a natural lighting full face picture? Try to get the angle of this one (see below), and ill do a side by side of yours and show you some things. I can see that the right eye is actually close to the hero (still could be refined though) , and the left eye needs work, but if you want to do that, you would most likely need to repaint the entire mask. So be forewarned if you want to do this you may fail initially but the only way to learn is to try. Id maybe wait till after Halloween if this is your Halloween mask and until you are feeling brave enough, as rehauling is a tedious process and missing Halloween cuz you couldnt finish in time is disheartening(I know from experience) Lucky for you ive been through this process a bunch and am currently working on a 78 so i ( and others here ) can help you out. As simple as the mask may seem, there are a ton of nuances to get it accurate.

If you dont want to do any modding or rehauling and are happy with it , i think the only other things would be to plastidip it to make it matte as Tots have a gloss finish, and also protect the inside from rot by doing layers of liquid latex and acrylic and then plastidipping it all to seal and water proof it, and futzing the hair like you said.

Nothing wrong with your format, feel free to ask questions. I dont mind reiterating , as it can be a pain to dig up old threads.

I tend to rant so also be forewarned lol.

Cool score and nice photos (full costume w/knife pic would be sweet too) and welcome to the group :jack_o_lantern: :kitchen_knife:

Thank you!! Yeah, I’ve heard people mention that the eyes were their usual problem. This is still a huge upgrade from my ridiculous Amazon one LMAO

Also, I’d like to mention just in case that the photo of my mask that you used for the comparison was taken in the mirror, so the eye shown would normally be on the other side. That comparison photo DID help show the similarities a lot though wow

And here’s the mask in better lighting with a more head on angle! It may look a bit off due to the mannequin head I put it on, but I tried to fill in some gaps with plastic grocery bags lol

Tried to line it up best i could , i think his head is tilted back slightly. Left eye would need slight trimming and a build up of liquid latex and acrylic with a tooth pick (too big on the bottom side toward nose angle dips too much, right eye would need slight trimming with curved sewing scissors or a soft dremel head (at lowest speed) and slight latex/acrylic addition to get the right top far side of the curve . Just thought id show you, no rush, and always mark out cuts with a pen or marker (isopropyl alcohol gets rid of it when your done.) But again if you are gunna do this you would have to repaint entire mask to blend the added latex back in.

Holy crap thank you. This is actually very helpful. We definitely have all of those items just laying around somewhere, too! Currently styling the hair a bit, so I’ll keep your tips in mind for when I get there.

You’re quite welcome, dude. If you want to do more angles as well let me know theres a couple reference photos we could try to match up.

I went in person at spirit and got a mask with I feel like pretty good eye cuts, I don’t plan on changing them.

Respraying the hair is not a bad idea, but tbh with you, the 1978 mask is also one of my favorites. During my childhood I wore this a lot on Halloween many times. I used to pair that mask with my dark blue denim jacket and scared a lot of kids in my neighborhood.

I’m hoping to find a Boogeyman at Spirit Halloween this year, due to the same fact that its better buying masks in store to see your options on quality

I got so annoyed because I found a really good one in terms of shape (and even the hair!) yesterday after my dad already spent, like, 60 bucks getting me the one I already have :sob: definitely check out your nearby spirit Halloween locations!
