That’s a fake BUT functioning guillotine, based on the Berger model (the one used in France from 1872 to 1977), but only 90% accurate - one and a half foot smaller, different way of blocking the blade on top of it, etc. - built for a Claude Lelouch’s movie in 1968. Since then, it was used in a dozen of movies.
I was contacted last spring by producers to be a technical advisor for a TV series showing one of the last execution in France ; the shooting happened in mid-August in the actual jail where the execution happened. So I answered questions, helped to assemble the guillotine, and I was even recruited to play one of the executioners. Some weird experience : living something you’ve read and talked about in books for about 25 years, even if it’s only a movie…
Anyway, executioners did wear coveralls to assemble the guillotine, since it’s quite a greasy machine, and Tradewears were sold pretty much at that time, so I figured “WTH” and decided to wore them for the shooting. I think it will appear too on the screen !
