Totally agree man, I’ve never understood why TOTS gets so much hate. There has never been a time when you can walk into a costume shop, and buy a decently accurate mass produced Myers mask from pretty much any of the films for under $100. The way I look at it is the TOTS masks are a good, solid base for you to build upon by adding more detail, and if done properly, these masks can end up looking very accurate and high end. For the average person who wants an accurate Myers mask from their favorite film, but can’t afford an indie mask, TOTS is practically a godsend.
I’m liking TOTS these days, bought a few of their products recently. I’d gotten out of the high end mask collecting game a few years ago, but I’m getting the bug again.
I have my issues with a certain someone there, but I always support TOTS. Justin is the man, and we should be very thankful for the hard work that the entire team at TOTS has put into offering us an amazing line up of masks and such.
I have no issues w/ TOTS. However…I would like to one day be able to walk into a Halloween store and buy a Halloween 1978 mask that needs no touch ups.
Like Chris Zephro said in Sean Clark’s video “The kids today are spoiled where back in the day all you got was crap” not exact words but close. I still remember getting old Blue Lips from the mall and stopping by the gas station to grab a brand new at the time Cherry Mello Yello. Almost made me sick lol! Yeah I remember them days. Lucky for me I didn’t really realize how bad that mask was. I guess I just thought hey it’s all we can get so deal with it attitude. Lol I love TOTS and have a good number of they’re masks and props. Cheers
I really like tots mask, I’m 41 back in my day I don’t even know if they even had indie mask to be honest no internet but the myers I had as a kid was pretty trash so for cheap option and to get movie mold is really unheard of
Early 2000’s it was Don Post The Mask, Rubies Blue Lips and Cinema Secrets had a line come out in 2003 (Economy, Deluxe, H8 Standard, H8 Special Edition) I remember going to the mall being super excited cause my friend just got the Cinema Secrets H8 Economy mask. I thought it was the shit. Lol I actually I had plans to get it. So I got the mall and went in Halloween Express and there was the full line of new Cinema Secrets. I seen the Deluxe and I had to have it. So I got it cause it resembled the Original Halloween mask the best. I remember the next day me and my friend had a nasty argument over who had the better mask and which looked more closer to the H1. Lmao So yeah I’m very grateful to TOTS.
The good ol days. Lol. I remember going into a Montgomery Wards in like '85 as a kid and seeing The Mask. I wanted it so bad but my parents could not see spending $40 on a mask. My mom did eventually get it for me when I graduated high school. When I saw it I was very disappointed. Didn’t look anything like the movie.
Yeh, this is the basic Trick or Treat Studios 1978 mask. I just removed the background and added some fog effects. I stood under a ceiling light to try and bring the features out.
When TOTS first came out, everybody agreed they were great masks for the layman, and many still feel that way. I will say that they’ve stepped up their game in the paint department in recent years, and I was blown away by the quality of their Kills mask. It’s never been their quality that’s bothered me, but their hypocrisy. Both Chris and Justin came out of the indie scene and while many other licensed small businesses who come out of their respective indie scenes have a tendency to turn a blind eye to the independent market, TOTS has had a track record of being snitches, and using their position as licensees to bully long standing crafters in this hobby like Tim Miller and Ben Fallaize. This board used to almost exclusively feature independently made masks. Now it almost exclusively features TOTS masks. That’s not a coincidence. There used to be dozens of independent mask makers who were popular on this board. Now it’s down to a handful. That too, is not a coincidence. Even worse is that TOTS has had a tendency to silence criticism of them both here and on the Facebook group.
Their products I like, it’s their tattling that irks me.
You said it! And it’s nothing but the truth so I guess that’s all I will say on that whole independent mask and narc-y antics thing It’s nice they do mass marketed stuff and make it quite accessible…. I’m sure we all can remember when there was pretty much nothing mask or merchandise wise even when a new movie was coming out. I’ve gotten out of the mask hobby a long time ago. Having said that I don’t think they are the be all end all but a nice option (especially for the mask market) at the price point! (I feel the same way about NECA’s merchandise too)
Trick or Treat Studios is great! Quality products at very reasonable prices. They give great base models for that picky collector who wants to upgrade the paint and hair. Sometimes reading comments from the very picky and unreasonable wanting collectors just reaffirm what Trick or Treat Studios is…a mass produced mask/prop company. You’re not going to get a $500 mask for $60 bucks. But, you’re gonna get a great base to work from…99% better than what’s out there.
It’s great seeing people rehauling their masks from tots too.
There have been some people that got really good just from doing that. I see it as a win for the hobby, absolutely.
