If you look at this great original pull notice how the eye goes deep in?
Well I notice on all recast witch masks they are flat and flush…IDK if its because they are recasts or because someone did a bad job recasting? Or even cutting the eyes open to much.
Man if i could just get one pull with the eyes like above i would make myself a witch painted up like Billy’s awsome black hoooded witch
I always thought something was missing in all the replicas I’ve seen of the witch particularly around the eyes. The “depth” may be what I’m seeing.
Jon I would LOVE to have one of these. Seems like there would be more screen used masks out there floating around. Look how rare the DB2, KH and so forth is. I know they are replicas but still the numbers are low. According to the number of masks seen in the factory shots of H3 there should be at least an equal chance snagging one of those you would think. Of course the replicas mentioned aren’t pushing 30 years old either.
That was something I noticed too right away from the re-casts out there of these masks. If you have one, you can see what the difference between a re-cast vs and original immediately. The detail is that unbelievable. Jim Lenard did the sculpt of the ‘Hagatha’ mask and I truly feel it’s a Don Post classic. Again, I have asked Don on several occasions to have Jim come in and re-sculpt updated versions of the ‘Hagatha’ and the ‘Pumpkinhead’ to sadly no avail. Maybe that would be something that several can bring up to him at ‘Mask Fest’.
But you do have to remember, this movie did nothing at the box office, it was a complete failure. Many collectors at the time thought the masks really meant nothing because ‘Myers’ was not in the movie; it was almost blasphemous to have anything from that movie. I remember going to my local T G & Y (Like a Wal-Mart) in Stillwater, OKlahoma and seeing these masks on the shelf at Halloween time. The Skulls sold and I saw a lot of kids trying the Don Post Darth Vader and Storm Trooper masks on and begging their Mom’s and Dad’s to buy them. The pumpkin mask was just ‘meh’ to me…mind you I didn’t see the movie until 1986, four LONG years later. Imagine if you will my best friend saying to me in 1989, “The masks won’t be too hard to find, nobody wanted them.” After his comment, I spent about 11 years trying to track down a full set. I wish the internet was around back then!
As Don Post, Jr. told me at the ‘Transworld’ Show back in 1997 about the ‘Halloween III’ masks made in the movie; those masks were sent to stores and sold. They actually did a production run of those mask while they were filming the movie. That is why I say “If you have an original set from Don Post Studios, you have a screen used set.” So, I consider my set screen used and they very well could be and you’d be hard pressed to say they aren’t.
The recasts honestly do not hold a candle to the originals. I’ve owned plenty of Witches - 3 from CGP, 3 from SSN, a couple of other random ones from different makers… they all left me feeling a bit empty.
When I finally got an original (screen used) from EA, I was amazed at the crisp wrinkles and vibrant colors on her. And she was in perfect mint condition…
Now that I have the whole original set, I’m stoked. Luckily the search only took me a few years… but that was just before the H3 popularity skyrocketed. Now, they seem next to impossible to get your hands on.
Billy, you still get props for selling me the OG Pumpkinhead - he doesn’t seem to stop smiling at me.
I really need to get some HC cases for this set to display them all properly. New pics are definitely in order as well.
And Jon, you’re right about the eye holes - on recasts flat or misshaped eyes always give it away. Also many of the witches don’t have those cool ears!
If I may go out of my way to correct you on your use of terminology, implying that “owning an original run, Don Post H3 mask means you own a screen-used H3 mask” is a very big error and thoroughly untrue.
I don’t care how many were made during the filming of H3…Unless you can find it ON SCREEN, and SCREEN-MATCH the piece in question, you have not proven to anyone that you own an original, screen-used H3 mask. “Original Don Post mask production” VS. “screen-used background prop from Halloween 3” is comparing apples to bananas…Please keep that in mind when you make such claims, Billy.
And here we go with Mr. Ryan Bean coming here to give his rude/useless opinion to the board.
Seems like the only time i see your name and replys is always negative and rude.
And yeap I have a screen used witch too :butthead:
Ryan, we’re cool but what was the point of your post?
There will always be those that doubt authenticity on a mask that is claimed to be screen used. No one is saying it’s screen worn or anything.
Pointing out the EXACT mask in the film would be next to impossible.
And imo the value on these H3 masks (Pumpkin and Witch) is the same regardless of whether or not the screen used claims are stated - they’re that rare.
The factory was in the film, the production line was shown in the film. My Witch came from the production line while the movie was being filmed so I believe it was shown in the movie at some point.
I don’t need a COA to make me feel better.
Just to pitch in this on thread and talk Billy down a notch is useless. C’mon now you’ve been around long enough to know that.
Frankly, I’m getting sick and tired of so many guys coming out of the woodworks just to point the finger saying “That isn’t screen used!” It’s old.
