Hello, Thank you in advance for your time. I am a long time fan of the Halloween franchise, and I am a big fan of this site as well. This is actually my first post, so I apologize if it’s been ask already before. I did a search but I couldn’t find anything.
I have been a fan of the original Carpenter classic since I first watched it nearly 30 years ago as a kid. I was right around the age of 10 and I watched it on cable. I was instantly made a fan for life. I later watched Halloween 2 and my love for Halloween and Michael Myers continued to grow. Despite being a fan of the franchise, my love really has always been for the first two movies (78,81). The others I enjoyed, but not like the first two. When I heard about Halloween 40 being made I was beyond excited. I went to see it opening night and I honestly felt my love for the Halloween franchise grow even stronger. I have found myself watching the original Halloween even more these days because of all the excitement and popularity with the latest movie. I did in fact really enjoy the new movie. So much so that I started getting into collecting mask. I went out and bought the TOTS Myers mask 2018 a couple months ago at Party City, and I plan to get more mask soon (independent artist if possible).
My question is, what do you mask collectors use or prefer when displaying your mask? I have seen some really cool looking stands online, and some have told me they are paper towel holders. To those who use the paper towel stands, do you still stuff the mask with anything inside? Also, what are your thoughts on mannequin heads? I saw some decent looking canvas heads on amazon that appeared to be sturdy and durable. However, I have never seen anyone ever use them when I have came across pictures online, etc. Sorry again for the long post. I am just excited about being brand new to mask collecting, and I figured this would be a great place to ask how to display them.
I personally use mannequin heads with plastic bags over them. Many members use excess bags or cotton to give the mask a certain stretch to either match a movie look or specific scene. As long as you cover a foam head, it is completely fine to use. As for stands, some members just use rolls of paper towels, others use paper towel stands or liquor bottles and others use actual mask stands. I use a variety but here are 2 of my masks on actual stands.
I make my own stands pretty similar to paper towel holders, use paper towel holders and paper towel rolls. I also do stuff all of them with plastic bags or packaging stuffing(the brown paper bag like stuffing things are shipped with sometimes) to stretch and keep the form of my masks that aren’t on shells. I also have a few on plastic wig stands from amazon. Cant find any pics that really show the stand but here is a smaller one, ive since started making them with different finishes besides stained wood like the blood splatter unfinished ones ive included.
Those stands look wicked. I love mine but they all are very high so putting them in cases is an issue. If you have a few for sale shoot me a PM man I’d like to grab some shorter stands for display
Thanks man! Ive actually thought about selling them and just never tried. The short one pictured i use with a foam head, others i make 12" tall which still fits inside a detolf. Maybe ill get a few going and see if i can, ill shoot you a pm when i do.
awesome!!! Thanks fellas for all of the replies and feedback. I love all of the pictures of the stands you guys posted. They all look amazing. I can’t wait to display mine soon.
Ditto on the paper towel stands (especially from the Goodwill for $2-3). They’re usually weighted pretty well. I use the styrofoam heads from Michaels/Hobby lobby inside the mask, they have a precut hole on the bottom that is perfect for sticking on the paper towel stake. I also cover the styro head with a black shirt or something to black out the eyes
