I was thinking about this a lot lately, and I’m not sure if it’s been asked at least to my knowledge, but I find it’s a pretty interesting one in terms of what you think captures the h1 look more. Do you prefer the H1 replicas that derive from the Billy Kirkus kirk, which includes anything between; NO Nightmareman 78, NO Psycho, NAG nightmare etc. or the 98 Nik used to create the 75K, 98proto etc.
I’d love to hear everyones thoughts and explain why they prefer which derivation.
anything Kirk based makes me happy. I really don’t have a favorite. Some masks I like the look of and others I don’t. And they can be masks from the same run.
They’re all unique. I could like one Maniac and dislike another, like one Creep and dislike another.
The original 98 protos are practically a master copy of the 1975 mold, whereas the other derivations like the shat, creep, etc are off a mass produced copy.
Also the same mask (much like the original) can look totally different depending on the light and the way it’s stuffed.
Myers mask are very elusive and sort of weird. One mask can look fantastic in certain lighting and worn or stuffed a certain way,.and then the same exact mask can look awful in other lighting.
It’s why I’ve joked some people could be holding the actual 1978 screen mask in their hands, magically transported in mint condition from 1978, and they’d say it looks wrong or looks like crap.
Part of the mystique and mystery of that mask is the wonderful way that it was shot and lite in the film. It’s not like a zombie mask or Freddy or a monster with lots of details,…a Myers mask is very subtle.
Maybe that’s part of what compels us to collect them and make them and trade them, we’re always looking for that magic mask that feels and looks just right to us.
According to Ken, as close as he ever came to working directly from the hero mask was a crude, hand-drawn diagram provided to him by Dick Warlock with some basic measurements. Ken informed me that the hero mask never left Warlock’s possession and he saw it in person after the KH/DW sculpture was completed. I have updated my research thread to reflect this.
As for the thread topic, I prefer the form and detail of Nik’s DP ‘98 Shatner descendants.
I agree, I can guarantee if I had a time machine and brought back the original mask and took a cell phone pic, people would say it’s not 100%. The mask changes from light to shadow and from film to digital easily.
I’m one of the ones who doesn’t believe that theory, but rather that they were actually master cast 75Ks that were then recast to make production molds (hence the bloat of actual production 98/99). At the time the 98 Prototypes were created laser scanning was new technology. I don’t think they had the technology to scan and print it without visible print lines at the time, especially not while keeping it cost effective. You can barely get things printed now with no print lines Do you know who originally started the theory that it was a laser scan, or if it’s ever been confirmed? I don’t know to much of the history behind it’s origins, just what I speculate. No matter what they are they are highly detailed versions no doubt! I’d love to own an original one day
Well that contradictes so many things said in the past. Nevertheless, he sure did capture the nuance of the hero like no other mask. The masks that go for perfect 75 kirks, do not look at all like the hero in my opinion. Both Dick, who owned the hero, and the present owner, state that their favorite replicas are the KHDW. If you follow every line of the KH it matches up. People say all the time, that the KH looks ackward. The hero looked ackward! That is why it took on so many looks in the two movies.
True, I’m just going by what I heard. lol Not sure where this theory came from, but if you go to old threads regarding the Proto and the 75K, that is brought up constantly. Would love speak with old Don Post employees about this.
