What makes or breaks a sculpt?

In your opinions, what makes or breaks a great Kirk sculpt? My opinion is both the v-brow and the lips. I’ve seen some sculpts that if one or both were different they’d be instantly more accurate.

Details being over exaggerated, same goes for the finishing

the eye shape makes or breaks a mask for me, some masks the lips look like the emmet kelly sad clown lips

All of what’s been said already plus the nose and chin. All affects the profile. The one thing that killed the 2nd Stab mask imo. I owned one and didn’t care for the profile at all

mine is Eye cut and Eyebrows. that can make a mask value 200$ to 600$. I’ve seen masks that ‘Very close to 75 Kirk’ to ‘Goofy Kirk’.

For me, definitely the eye cuts. I’ve seen great masks with shitty eyecuts and instantly looks nothing like it. Just take a look at real 1975 Captain Kirk masks that have been converted lol. It is literally the exact same sculpt as the hero mask yet the poorly done eye cuts ruin it. Also size is very important to me. The original 75 mask was a child’s mask and seeing replica masks at like 25” which make grown men look like 5 year olds dressing up as Myers just instantly loses any accuracy for me *wink TOTS H1 1978 mask *wink

EXACTLY… SIZE… the biggest accuracy factor in a way… I only look at 23.5" -23".

100% man. Even if someone isn’t wearing it, you can totally tell when a Myers mask is huge. Everyone should take a look at a real 75 Kirk, it’s tiny.

Surprised to see eye cuts mentioned so much since they are cut and not part of the sculpt. Most of the main players feature Kirk eyes

Oversharpened lips, the eyes, oversculpted cheekbones, wrong nose, size.

But the eye cuts if done incorrectly can break the sculpt

For me, it’s the cheek definitions, and generally how softened the features are. If the definition is too sharp, or too angular, the sculpt comes across as amateurish. I think that sometimes, newer sculptors get too eager and rush their sculpt instead of being patient and making sure all the features are smoothed out.

I think the smaller sized masks make for a definitely more accurate mask but also very importantly as was stated here earlier are the eye cuts. Eye cuts to me really make a mask pop or make a mask look really off.

The mouth area and cheeks are super important in a sculpt.

If the eye cuts are done incorrectly they can break that specific mask not the sculpt.

Yes, same thing man. I’m pretty sure OP is referring to a finished result, not just what makes a great sculpt on its own as you could have a perfect sculpt but it really doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to get the best result out of that sculpt.

Ok no worries. He specifically said what makes a great Kirk sculpt tho. Only reason I mentioned it.

Lips and cheekbones

1…Eye cuts (gotta be spot on)
2…Hairline (I hate the perfect straight line the whole way around)
3…Length of neck (Seen some with the neck far to long)

Not only when people have a straight hairline, but when it starts behind the ears. Drives me nuts!!
