What was the cause of this?

Hey guys, I was wondering if someone could tell me what caused this? I know it’s latex bubbles but I’ve never had this happen on a 78 mask before. I’ve done a few of these and non turned out like this. I used an air brush on this as I always do but not sure why this happened. Is it too much latex in the paint? Air brush issues? Or mask issues? Please help so hopefully I don’t do it again.

I’ve had a few of these on all of my masks, though they were from the Blumhouse trilogy. They were there even before I did any work, so I’m assuming its just the masks. Maybe try sanding or smoothing it somehow?

The mask was relatively smooth before I sprayed it. I took off the latex layer twice because of this. Maybe I’m doing something wrong?

If you’re using latex and paint through the brush, it could be too much latex. Do you hear or see any sputtering or splattering when applying it?

I can’t remember but that’s a good shout, I’ll keep an eye out for it next time I use it. Thank you for your reply

No problem! I heard its best to use a 1:1 ratio of your paint and latex, both THINNED (just a bit of water added so its not super thick and goes through the brush easily)

That’s the problem, I’ve got to have it thinned down to like thin milk or it jams the brush. Airbrushes are the bane of my life :joy:

Maybe try dry brushing instead it might be an easier way for you to layer it on with it getting that weird texture. That’s the technique I used on my mask after having the same problem.

Your airbrush is clogged.

Funny enough, I’m seeing those bubbles and bumps on my Ends mask! I’m just gonna take this paint off again and buy some liquid latex to mix. Whats your recommended ration man?

When it started to bubble on my 2018 mask I used sandpaper to get most of them off, I had to dry brush over it again but the smoother result was worth it

Oh yeah! You meant the ration of latex and paint mixed. More paint less latex, so about 70% paint 40% latex. Sorry for being confusing earlier

Its all good! I’m gonna order some of this stuff Amazon.com

And possibly buy an airbrush just to ensure a smooth base layer

Okie dokie :+1:, how’s your Ends mask coming along so far?

Since the acrylic paint alone started to crack a bit, I decided to remove it. I’m gonna buy some liquid latex and then paint it again, possibly with an airbrush. Then I can do some more washes and then dry brush the white over the cracks before the tonal wash

Good luck bud! Exited to see the result.

Thanks! I’ve learned a lot along the way and won’t give up. Funny enough this never happene on my H40, probably because this mask has so much more details that its hard for the paint to stick

The H40 has a smoother surface with only the cracks , shading, and washes to worry about but it was still a challenge for me probably because It was my first time doing an H40😆. But the kills is still really hard for me to get right for some reason

I found it best to basically treat it like an H40 just with the wash. Just have the base off white and then go over it with a fairly dark olive green-brown wash, then wipe it away. The wash should also be fairly thin!

Again I say: your airbrush is clogged.

And 70/40 is not the right ratio. The correct mixture is 50/50 acrylic/latex, thinned with either distilled water or ammonia to the consistency of heavy cream.
