I was waiting to see if a thread for 5 - Res got made to express this, but I agree. Design wise, there’s not a whole lot that matches the previous movies, but the film still has heavy atmosphere and strong visuals.
It has a great atmosphere. I thought the part with Myers watching Rachel at home and then being in the house with her was creepy af. And the same when he’s watching both Tina and Sam leave the house and he’s just standing there watching them from the front window….very creepy.
For H1, the most unpopular opinion I have of it is twofold. I think that Dr. Loomis was too much of an exposition dump, and it’s no wonder people never took him seriously. The character exists to give power and status to Michael’s killing. That’s it. Secondly, I think Bob was a stupid character that, unlike the girls, was never characterized and honestly shouldn’t have existed. Michael should’ve killed, in his place imo, Tommy Doyle. He had no connection or voyeurism towards Bob until Lynda brought him to the Wallace’s place to fuck him. He was in the way, and while that’s fine, it would’ve cemented Michael’s evil more if he killed an actual child.
H2-wise, my most unpopular opinions are thus: the movie’s okay. But it’s not a good movie, and it’s not the best sequel. That imo goes to H18, which is a superior sequel. The movie is a slog to get through unless you’re watching back to back with the original. Dick Warlock makes a terrible Shape imho. Most of the characters don’t feel like people like the original did. And the sister twist is something that I agree on Carpenter on: stupid and pointless. Further, while the kills are great, and there’s a moment or two of seeing Michael blend into the environment like a ghoulish monster, there’s a lot less stalking than the original.
H3. Underrated as it is, I still think H3 as a guilty pleasure. It’s not a good horror movie. It’s a decent thriller, and there are some moments of spookiness, but H3’s only saving grace is that it’s so ridiculous that it’s bearable. Really… The magic of stonehenge and returning to Samhain using it? That’s the best it could come up with? Makes for entertaining popcorn fodder, and is criminally underrated, but on the whole it doesn’t leave me thinking or creeped out.
H4’s is really simple. It’s overrated. It’s a piece of crap. Loomis is underutilized, or perhaps it would’ve been better to make a new character since they did that for Laurie in Jamie. Speaking of Jamie… Holy shit… I…fucking…hate…her. She’s a kid, sure, but I think her character’s too… Combination of Laurie and Tommy. She’s good when she’s acting scared. The scene that comes to mind on that front is the rooftop chase and her trying to wake up her… Stepsister? Cousin? I can’t remember. The way she cries and calls out for help is honestly great… But everything else is trash. Finally, there’s the plot… Holy shit, the plot. This could’ve done very well with a copycat killer, and how Michael’s boogeyman status isn’t just limited to him. But no. Needed to be Myers for some god-forsaken reason. The actor doesn’t even portray him well. He’s a stuffed scarecrow with immense strength: a Jason wannabe.
Not a huge fan of the Castle stretch, the actors playing teenagers are obviously too old to pass for teenagers.
Halloween 2 is good, but Warlock walks a little slow. Where the hell is the rest of the hospital staff?! I’ve spent way too much time in hospitals all my life, and this hospital is pathetic!
H4 is a good movie, and the mask is epic. It’s scary, it’s ghostly, it looks almost innocent that it’s sinister!
I respect your opinion on the mask. For me it’s terrible.
It’s such a flimsy , and thin mask. It honestly looks like it’s made of paper mache. The part 5 mask is ugly, but at least it has some structure to it.
