Something that I have been thinking of for a while now is the future for Halloween movies. Continuity of previous plots has put any further developments in a large rut. With the way RZ ended his series, and also how Resurrection was left open…leaves many to wonder “where they hell are they gonna go from here?”
One thing that is possible is that they continue after an earlier film. The most logical spot would be to start new after Halloween 6. Chris Morgan has already hopped on that wagon with his fan films! But would that just make things even more complicated? Too much backstory and explanation has been the downfall of the series.
The other option out there that I am sure very few have thought of, would be to look past the films and look at the pages of the Halloween Comics!
I had the pleasure of reading Night Dance this past week, and I must say…it was fantastic!
Everything from the atmosphere to the characters, VERY well done. It is beautifully terrifying! And it made me wonder why none of the stupid hollywood people have jumped on this! THIS is a very promising direction the series could go! Any other direction leaves a lot of room for failure. The best thing for the series to bring something new, while still holding on to what makes the series great!
Have a FAN direct the film!!! The new Evil Dead film is a prime example of that!!!
If they don’t think of anything soon…im afraid the series has come to an end…
PLEASE Write what you think about all this!
I know that I have touched on a bit of this before in a previous post I made, but I wanted to dig a bit deeper into it
I still think a TV series could work. One that focuses on the original event and the night he came home. 6 to 13 “1 Hour” Episodes. Give it an “Open Ending” with a possible follow up film-based sequel.
What I would LOVE to see (but will never happen) is the series to start back right where the original Halloween II left off. The next installment would be Halloween III and would feature Michael.
At the same time the franchise “started over” from the end of Halloween II (parts I and II are fine and NEED NO redo) I’d love to see a “Season of the Witch” yearly franchise start. There could be any Halloween themed story told each year, keeping with the original direction the series was trying to go with Halloween III. But by doing it this way you could have the Halloween franchise co-exist with the Season of the Witch franchise.
That might work for us hardcore fans, but Michael himself has become such a pop icon that you’d probably have the same affect as the original Halloween III did in '82. Spin-off not featuring Michael would probably flop, I fear.
No doubt, you could never have another Halloween not featuring Michael.
The “Season of the Witch” franchise would NOT include the name Halloween at all. It would be the franchise that would have a new Halloween (the season) themed story each year and co-exist with the Halloween Franchise that WOULD feature Myers.
With the horror genre being very popular right now, I think it would be an EXCELLENT time to do this.
I think working off of the Trick 'r Treat title may be more effective in producing Halloween-themed movies. It’s more recent, although straight to video.
Leave slepping dogs lye… I think as awesome as the Halloween series movies have been, I think they should be archived. It’s a piece of art work… meaning at a point it could be over worked and ruined for ever. I think the idea for fan based films is awesome and thats the direction it should take.
Exactly what I was going to post. I’d love to see a continuation of Halloween II. Michael would obviously be pretty burned up. I think it’d be great/but where and how does Laurie Strode fit in? Since so much time has passed since H2. Dr Loomis dies in H2. Where would the story go? Also, I’d think it’d be wise to have John Carpenter or even Rosenthal direct.
I always thought Daniel Farrands writing for H6 was strong. The decisions the director/studio made muddled up the concept and hurt the film in my opininon, but I still enjoyed it, particularly the producer’s cut. So, I would love to have seen a continuation of that story line, IF Farrands was involved and IF Donald Pleasance were living. Those are two really big IFs and Loomis is obviously off the table now, so I think the next best thing would be to see Tommy Doyle become Michael’s new principal nemesis. How crazy would it be to see Paul Rudd in a Hallowen film again at this stage in his career!
They got off story years back. Too bad that they did. They could’ve made the series into something special. A real monster. Kinda like stories of Creepshow, and Tales from the Crypt. Different stories on Halloween night. Even kinda like Trick 'r Treat, etc. It’d of worked. Halloween III is a great movie. Many people just think too much of it having the “Halloween” name and “NO” Michael Myers.
Myers white mask all the time and robotic ways are too lame for me, as well as the story jumping all the time. I just pass on the other movies after HIII. I’ll watch them but don’t own them. The masks look terrible. JMO.
If they were to take it back. Maybe it could involve a story of Michael having a son. Yeah, Michael has a son. Michael Myers really did die in the fire with Dr. Loomis on that night. It’s been 18 years later and Myers son is all of the sudden having all these weird, demented, evil thoughts before Halloween night. He kills his girlfriend on Oct 30th. Stalks the high school planning his night, and the rampage in Haddonfield begins anew on Oct 31st during the Halloween costume dance at the High School…
Even without the studio’s intentions, Farrand’s story delved way too deep into the age-old question of “why?” for me. he made the same mistake nearly every viewer makes when watching Halloween. They ask “why?”. Why does Michael kill? But that’s the point. What makes him such an enigma and so scary is that we don’t know why he kills. The less that is defined for us, the more we are left to conjure on our own. And that, to me, is the smarter side of film. Movies give the audience a lot more than a book would, so to leave a movie audience with questions is a sign that what you set out to achieve, on-screen, was affective.
Michael is such a household name now, that the studio could pull a Friday the 13th and make a movie every year with the same basic plot, different cast, and I would enjoy it. As long as the vital elements are in place.
Dren, I understand what you mean about asking why and I pretty much agree but I also think that by the time they had gotten to making the 5th Halloween film involving Michael, it was fair to start asking why. The franchise was certainly on the ropes and needed a new angle to work with, at least in the eyes of the people being asked to finance another film. I don’t mean to hijack the OP’s thread, lol, I could discuss this stuff forever.
This is why I always loved Hill and Carpenters idea of turning Halloween into an anthology series. It wasn’t that hard to think Michael survived some stabbings and the six (or was it seven?) shots. But to survive being burned to a crisp was illogical, but then again I’m a horror film fan and kinda expect these things. But damn, Michael and Loomis should’ve died
at the end of 2 and stayed dead. The series has really turned into an abomination as a whole. From the horrible masks to the dumb portrayal of Michael as some body building behemoth, the series is a disappointment.
Downhill.
I don’t see a single way for them to reboot or continue the series at this time. Maybe in a few years a reboot with a good director might be able to bring some life back into it, but anything to quickly, or anything continuing the story (from H6, H20, H8, hell even RZ’s H2) will most likely be a gigantic failure and it will just put Michael off on the back burner even longer until we finally get a good Halloween.
Now the Season of the Witch ideas, that’s gold. I’d love to see some of that as a tv special every Halloween, or a series.
I know my opinion is “negative.” Pardon me for having an opinion that differs from your viewpoint.
