The two I seen at Spirit were bad. They looked cheap and the hair was super bad. The hair was loose and coming apart at the seams on the top and bottom. I was like, “meh” on them, too. I was expecting more.
Basically, yes. The original Shat + Psycho moulds would have been copied to product the TOTS master moulds, so there’s a few generations difference in detail loss.
My TOTS Kirk has great proportions, it’s just missing the fine curves and wrinkles, especially around the nose. It has to be lit pretty dramatically to show surface detail. I tried to avoid adding dirt just as ‘shading’ as much as possible.
The TOTS 78 is designed to look Castle Shapey in bright light, so its features are quite exaggerated. But they also hold up in mass production casts better. The TOTS 78 eyes are too large IMHO, the nose is massive and the jaw stretch doesn’t look quite human (although sticking a head in it would probably fix that).
