Holy crap, my first relevant post on here.
This is a question I’ve thought particularly hard about, because I don’t think it’s often addressed enough: What do we think of the actors who play Michael Myers?
Nick Castle, obviously, is great and defined the character. Not much more needs to be said.
Dick Warlock was pretty good, but more robotic than I would have liked. Castle made Michael move more or less like a person. He swung his arms when he walked. I think Warlock turns Michael more into something that isn’t human, which is something that usually makes him scary: he looks and moves like a person, but is beyond that.
George Wilbur is a mixed bag for me. He can be frightfully intimidating and he’s a pretty big guy, but he kinda doubles down on the robotic style that Warlock introduced. It makes Michael look like he’s moving on puppet strings. And I know this isn’t Wilbur’s fault, but the shoulder pads in H4 don’t make him look scary, they almost make him look fluffy. In Halloween 6, however, I think Wilbur is at his best. Michael is bulky without looking silly, and he way toned down the stiff movement. I’m not Halloween 6’s biggest fan, but I love Wilbur as Michael in this one.
I don’t know much about Don Shanks as an actor, but his Michael is sub-par. He just doesn’t have a presence, and the way he holds his knife has always bugged me. You know, raised to chest level and actually walking around in that pose. It just looks goofy.
Chris Durand is okay. He definitely moves a bit more like Nick Castle than the previous actors, but I do have one problem: you can see his eyes. It totally breaks the “darkest eyes” shtick. I know that’s more the mask’s problem, but the way Durand keeps his eyes so wide so frequently, Michael just looks perpetually surprised at everything.
Brad Loree is…fine? Like Shanks, I don’t think this Michael really has a screen presence, but he doesn’t look as silly.
Tyler Mane…wow. This might be the most intimidating Michael has ever been. Mane’s sheer height and physicality really makes a monster out of Michael. Stealth and hiding in shadows has been replaced by outright brute force. It’s terrifying. He towers over everyone and it might be the most aggressive we have ever seen Michael. In short, I LOVE Tyler’s Michael.
James Jude Courtney is great. He differentiates himself from Nick Castle, but he still captures what makes Michael so frightening. He moves like a cat, yet he captures some of that physicality that makes Tyler Mane’s Michael so frightening. At the same time, he incorporates some of that stealth that defined Michael in the first movie.
So yeah. Those are just my thoughts.
