Why did Nick Castle not return in H2?

I’m sure this has been discussed before, but it’s something that has always made me curious.

Now I know from previous interviews that Castle has stated that he would’ve done the sequel if asked. But he was never asked. If I remember correctly, he was a bit peeved that when they asked for the mask back for the filming of H2 they didn’t ask him if he wanted to return as well.

Any insight?

Thanks in advance.

Also, if I remember, didn’t Debra Hill basically regret recasting the role?

I don’t remember hearing that he would have done the sequel if they asked him to. I believe he was working on getting his own films off the ground at the time (including The Last Starfighter, which came out a year after Halloween II).

He said once that he did not do it because he wanted to be a director and do his own movies.

If only he knew then what we all know now.

Btw, awesome avatar!

That’s not true, in an interview I can remember where he says Debra called him and asked for the mask back for Halloween II and he said…okay…then after didn’t understand why she never asked him back to play the role again…Then she goes on to “bitch” about how Dick Warlock couldn’t get it just right like Nick did… :unamused:

In all honesty, it’s probably because the budget went up and they could afford an actual stuntman for the job.

Nick isn’t an icon, he was just some kid that walked up to the set and asked for a job in the pictures, and happened to get one as the killer.

I heard this as well. Also, that they wanted a stunt man to play the part of Myers. Warlock was that. So many stories change though over 30+ years…

The most recent reference that I know of was a few years ago at Monster Mania 17 where he was asked that very question. His answer pretty much confirms it was never in consideration. Only reason he came to be involved in H1 in the first place was because he and John C. were friends and Nick wanted to hang around the set and get acclimated with filmmaking. While he was there, John asked him to put the mask on and walk around. Hence, horror history was made. Once H1 wrapped, Nick’s goal was pretty much accomplished and he had broken through and gotten his first directing jobs by the time H2 was green lit. About playing Myers a second time; from the sound of things, he didn’t ask and neither did they.

Here is the link if you’d like to hear it from Nick himself:

He has 2 stories. He has said his “personal” career he wanted it lifted off then he said he felt pretty mad that they didn’t ask for him back. :unamused:

Thanks BTW.

Yeah, Nick’s no exception when it comes to retelling the past. Multiple versions of a story.

Well, to be fair, it was the 70s.

I can’t really believe this. Dick has had nothing but praise for Debra (as does everyone else), and even posted a thank-you note she sent to him after production wrapped on H2. I think any talk of Debra regretting hiring Dick is just Chinese Whispers.

Dick stated himself that Debra didn’t give him any direction for how he was supposed to act as Myers, thus why he walked like he did, but from a reality aspect, falling on your back from that can cause problems in how you move, that’s what makes it more creepy to me
