Why do you like Masks?

Although I don’t have any masks yet, although I plan to get one soon, I have many other replica props like lightsabers, Indy hats and helmets, so I thought I would expand my collection past where it is now into other films like Halloween. And since the 1978 Halloween was the first real horror movie I’ve seen, it only felt natural that I would want a piece of that movie to collect with my other props and costume pieces.
And I just love how the mask looks in general.

I love dressing up and being someone (or something) else, love getting into character, and love spooking people. For the last 5 Halloweens I lived at home (2008-2013), I was essentially a decoration on my mom’s lawn. First 3 years as a scarecrow that held deathly still until I had to jump-scare someone, the last 2 as the Slender Man, where I stood at the end of our walkway and held waaaay too still. Children were terrified of me and adults weren’t sure if I were a mannequin or not (one tried to grab me to prove I was just a prop).

This Halloween was the first I’ve dressed up for in a few years. Even just creeping around town as the Shape, and the few times I’ve been around as the Shape in the weeks leading up to Halloween, the reactions were something to behold.

So, mask collecting isn’t really my hobby so much as dressing up and having harmless fun and spooking and enjoying the time and experience with other fans. Next year in my H2 getup (or so my plan goes), this should be doubly fun. I like masks because they enable me to have this kind of fun with others.

Sorry, rambly.

I had a similar experience! I was enamored with the Scream costume when I was only five years old. It had such power. I couldn’t say why I love masks, but some things are best not psychoanalyzed. :pumpkin:

When I was a kid I would dress up in costumes a LOT. like I would literally go get Chinese in a costume [emoji38] I would even go to like a Christmas party or something in a scary costume. I was a little weirdo but hey I guess in a way we all are lol, I always liked dressing up as something else. Its extremely easy for me to get into character with Myers, Jason, freddy, etc. I just put the mask on and I’m a different person, its fun.

I’ve always been a fanatic of horror movies and scary stories ever since I was very, very little, so it’s something I’ve always gravitated towards and liked.

i remember being a kid i loved dressing up for halloween. my 1st-3rd grade teacher and her husband owned a local haunted hayride and house attraction that we would take field trips to the farm and i had a fascination with it (still go down every few years and catch up with her and get a scare in on the hayride) i have always had a fascination with masks and horror films but just never had an urge to collect till now. I think seeing halloween 18 on opening night sparked my interest in this as the new tots mask is the only mass produced mask that i like the look of and since seeing it have learned of the awesome masks that others are making and remind me so much of the original mask. cant wait to dive into this hobby some

Because I think there is a little bit of “Michael” in all of us and a mask lets us express that portion. In my case by stalking people in corn mazes.

My shrink says my collection is ok but my wife has issues when I wear it around the house and sharpen my knife collectin in the garage.

My therapist thinks collecting is a positive way to express my interests and has helped tremendously with my PTSD. She said to know my limits and not be manic with purchases though so I don’t get a mask every month or anything crazy like that.

While I thought the second half was humorous, I did reflect on the first half for a bit. The little bit of Michael that’s in me seems to be the one that enjoys causing fear and the uncanny valley effect. But it’s a more harmless fear I prefer.
