I know his mask represents his personality as I’ve explained to others but they still question, why wears a mask in the first place? Whats he got to hide? whats his purpose?
I always assumed it had something to do with him wanting to hide his face because of his need to kill. Something along the lines of not wanting people to see his true self, so he hides his face. Either that, or psychologically if he hides his face when he kills it’s not wrong and it mentally allows him to do what he wants.
Because the filmakers wanted the killer to wear a creepy mask. Nothing more nothing less no deep meaning

Yeah I agree, I think it was just used to put the s**** up people.
I always read more into the mask than what was there, I kinda felt like when the mask was on Michael became the killing machine, became more than a man.
If you look at the moments as a child and at the end when his mask is taken off…it’s almost like someone has taken his batteries out and he just blanks out. But when the mask comes back on the chaos is unleashed.
To hide his ugliness
I think it’s tragic…There is a deep seeded reason that started around 4-5, being insulted while at the same time feeling a sense of power…I think it’s a tragic case of mental abuse…Tragic! Once a mask covered his face. The overwhelming desire to be another soul, in another world…In another time,
No i’m kidding, because it’s a scary movie & a plain white masks with no emotion on it is able to be very scary. Things you can’t see or quite explain but know it’s intentions are very bad are what scare people the most in all people.
…Cause it’s Halloween

I think its pretty simple. He wore a mask when he wacked his sister, so it was only natural that when he returned home, he did it again. Thats what he remembered. ![]()
Also he kills on Halloween when everyone wears masks…I don’t think it gets any simpler than that as Kaizu pointed out.
Simple answer of them all, nobody will know who you really are under a mask and assume it’s just a costume.
He wears the mask because john carpenter says to wear the mask
I think Michael wears the mask on Halloween night so he can easily sneak around undetected with all the other people who are also dressed up. I think the blank pale emotionless face of the shapes mask also represents that he has no soul.
Because it was in the script
LOL, thank you! What better way to get away with disguising your identity than on Halloween? Interestingly enough, I always found it strange that neither Tommy nor Lindsey got dressed up to go trick-or-treating. Kind of an obvious undersight on John Carpenter’s part! I always wondered why since I first saw the movie as a kid.
Tommy is dressed up as an astronaut.
Really? I’ll have to take a look. It sure wasn’t obvious though. Where’s the head part?
I think he’s supposed to be a pre-flight astronaut. Or maybe he took the rest of his costume off after he went trick-or-treating.
As for Lindsay, I think she probably preferred to stay home and watch horror movies instead of going out.
Interesting about the astronaut costume. Woulda been cool to see a head piece laying around somewhere. In fact, it would have been AWESOME (I guess) to see both Lindsey and Tommy out trick-or-treating…with the Shape hiding behind a corner of a house or something! Laurie telling them they’ve gotten enough candy, etc. ![]()
The script had the shape described as having a pale blank expressionless face. I’m sure it’s much easier to show this with a mask… and it is Halloween.
I just sort of assumed Lindsey and Tommy went Trick or Treating earlier in the day, but I agree it seems odd that they stayed in and didn’t go out.
