Why the H5 mask is so hard to replicate?

Because of the fact that I am going to be sculpting an H5 mask soon, I have been studying photos of the mask being worn and unworn. While doing this I noticed something that may correlate with why the H5 mask is so difficult to replicate; If you look closely at the photos of Don Shanks wearing the mask, you can see that the chin appears to be very full, and the face long. If Don’s head caused the mask’s chin to bulge and give the face a “longer” appearance, similar to the way that Nick Castle distorted the H1 mask, then this would not only explain why the H5 mask is so hard to replicate, but also why even the SSN masks, which as most know came from the “movie molds”, even appear to be off or have something missing. Photos showing the bulging chin are attached below.

I hope someone, hopefully you :sunglasses: , produces an accurate h5 mask soon! The screen used mask had a very creepy look to the face that hasn’t been recaptured yet.

I agree with you. There are some great H5 masks, but it just seems like none of them have totally captured the on screen look for me. They’re all missing the major “creep” factor, for lack of a better term, that the on-screen mask displays. I really think I have a good shot at sculpting this mask for the community, we’ll see!

You’re totally right about the mask taking on a “Castle stretch” appearance, that and the lack of good unworn pictures are the main reasons that make recreating this mask a challenge. Even in my attempt to recreate this mask, I incorporated a little of that stretched look into the sculpt as seen below. Good luck with your upcoming project too bro! :myers:

I never get sick of looking at that mask. You did excellent work on that. I totally agree about the lack of unworns. The only ones seem to be of the mask when it’s half rotted, unfortunately.

Thank you for the good luck wish! I’m super excited to get to work on it. Right now I’m making up a Glen doll from Seed of Chucky, then I plan on making the H5 and H4 masks!

Thanks for the kind words! The best unworn shots of this mask are found right here in the classifieds,

I just wish I had these for reference at the time I did my sculpt, I’m getting pretty motivated to retool it or even do another ground up attempt.
Also I’ll be looking forward to seeing pics of your completed Glen project.

ghostly shape please keep me in mind for this project.im a lover of the h5 mask!just haven’t purchased for lack of what I see as accurate.be very interested to possibly see what you come up with.good forensic work with noticing the sort of stretch.possibly?is it true that this mask is of a mold off the walking dead producers head?greg nicotero?suppose it would be good to know any and all info going into a sculpt of this mask…hopefully well get to see some progress of your work?very interested to see what you come up with…

Its amazing to think about each movie and how much different each mask would have looked if someone else had worn it. Think about Warlock in an H4 or Castle in H4.

I wear my masks and see every single difference between me wearing it and the Hero in each film and I want to replicate the exact look so bad it bothers me. I know it shouldnt, but it bothers me so much lol

I think probably because it was sculpted after Greg Nicotero’s head and face. Not to mention the nose prosthetic, and the eye cuts are pretty distinct. Either way good luck, H5’s are easier one of the fewer masks to come by, so I hope it turns out well for you!

:myers :drinkers:

I coulda sworn Don said they didn’t use a lifecast or something along those lines. I’m going to ask him just in case though!!

Can’t wait to see you take a stab at it. None of the replicas to date have really done it for me and you may very well be right with his chin stretching the mask some

Won’t be for a while I’d think. I have a very, very special idea for an ultimate H5 mask. Stay tuned!

I certainly could be wrong. I just thought I heard that. Also, Greg is a great special F/X guy so I could see him being responsible for making it back then.

No you could totally be right! I just don’t remember, I’ve always hear conflicting stories on this.

Edit: this was Don’s response.

“The original was off of Greg’s, but it had to be modified fit my face”

I’ll be waiting patiently brother! Can’t wait to receive a PM when a proto of that H4 is ready :smiling_imp: hoping to get myself a Christmas gift if possible

Greg is great when it comes to special F/X, don’t get me wrong. I love his work in Day of the Dead, The Walking Dead, Halloween 5, and Casino. I’m just not sure he was the right guy to be responsible for the H5 mask. If that is the case, I know he’s been working with another gentleman for years, I forget his name though. I believe he is a Co-Owner at KNB F/X.

Oh for sure, but I’m not trying to say hes 100% responsible for the H5 mask, just partially in a way (as far as I know).

Yes, KNB was founded and co-founded by Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger

For the sake of accurate information… the original mask was sculpted by Robert Kurtzman, (the “K” of KNB,) over a lifecast of Greg.

Thank you!
