I just went to the theater last night to see RZ’s H2, and here’s my take on it…It’s a tricky series to “remake”~~ Halloween fans, myself included, are the upmost LOYAL fans i’ve ever encountered throughout my life, and i don’t think ANY remake or re-vision would satisfy the “diehard” halloween fans…The thing we all seem to forget, is that RZ’s sequel, H2, didn’t have to follow the cookie cutter original H2 for Zombie…He had more free reign to change up alot of what we know as the original H2 to make it His own. This wasn’t meant to be exactly like the original, and RZ was trying to “Humanize” Michael more so in this sequel to give a different spin on how we might percieve Michael. Michael NOT wearing his mask all the time, showing his ageing with the Beard scenes ,showing Michael move about on his journey to Haddonfield, his Grunting while he made his kills~~ All these tactics were meant to make Michael seem , More Human than just some entity~~ If you kept an open mind while watching this flick ,it was a decent version in it’s own right.
That being said, by doing this Humanization of Michael Myers though, i couldn’t help but feel rubbed the wrong way, as many of you did. I tried to distance myself somewhat from the original when i went to see both RZ’s versions, but i can’t help but feel like RZ disected Michael WAY TOO MUCH~~ I don’t want to remember Michaels mom being a freakin stripper, or the foul mouthed alcholic “stepdad”,or how Michael takes a bus/plane/train to get to Haddonfield… that just ruined it for me personally. The thing that made the original so intense for me, was the notion that Michael had no real reason to become a mass murderer…he was purely and simply…EVIL…sent here to F@#k us ALL up!!!
Even after the smoke cleared from the theater by raging fans though, it WAS wicked to see Michael live on the Big Screen yet again, i just wish RZ had more respect for the series and it’s fans by staying more true to the facts set forth by the originals, not making it up as he went along…
And what’s this H3 3-D i’m hearing about??? ha ha…God help us all…lol )
I will agree to the gore factor. I love it personally, but I see some people (guys even, not just girls) close their eyes or put their heads down. Im like “wtf u oing, youre gonna miss the best part, lol”… so that could have been a reason for some leaving.
The acting and script were indeed pretty amateur. BUt, the 3-D wasn’t the only good thing in the film, imo; Brian Tyler’s score was great, the photography was pretty impressive overall, and the film was nicely edited and looked very “polished”.
Yeah in the original it is definately more of heavy breathing, not grunting like in RZ’s H2…Michael didnt grunt that much in RZ’s H1 either…I liked the heavy breathing Michael does in the original which would of been fine if Rob’s Myers did that…I didnt like the same kill bit either…It was very noticeable and like cmon, he can do something else now…Worse things for me were no mask, half a a mask, hobo look, same kills, sherri moon and the white horse, young michael and the awefull grunting…Best things for me was the visuals, the dark vibe, tyler as Michael and the lighting…There wewre some otehr things I liked but my favorite scene was outside the rabbit in red…Michael straight up snatched that dude up with bruteness…That kicked ass…I also liked the first 15-20 minutes…I think rob should have stayed with the hospital bit…I was enjoying that and I loved Michaels look in the begining…He looked so creepy to me…Overall my true opinion is that it was a great Horror slasher film but a Terrible Halloween installment…
No, seriously…we’ve been discussing this idea in my “clan” and we thin there is a distinct difference between the sounds Castle and Mane make in their respective films. Mane’s sounds are CLEARLY vocalized grunting… Whereas Castle’s sounds are more of exertion while breathing that make that sound because; a) he’s wearing a mask, b) he’s frustrated, c)he’s breathing very heavily and is somewhat animalistic. I mean, think about it…one of the scenes where Castle (or Tommy Lee Wallace…I can’t remember) vocalizes that I will ALWAYS remember is right after he’s been stabbed in the eye by Laurie while attacking her in the closet. He’s not exerting force at that moment…so it doesn’t make sense for him to “grunt”. What he’s doing is trying to catch his breath while also making sounds vocalizing his surprise, pain, etc. I wouldn’t call that “grunting” at all.
If Michael makes noises now and then, it’s all good. Like in JC’s “Halloween”, he DID make noises…but it wasn’t constant and it didn’t happen EVERY time he did something. In Zombie’s film, I wouldn’t have minded it now and then…but it was just too much. It was like so many of the other things in the movie; overkill.
Or the breathing he does when he is choking laurie at the end…Or after Lookis shoots him in the face and he standing in the bedroom waiting for 5 more…The most clear sign that it is breathing is the very end when the movie is going through all the places Michael had been…You can clearly hear him in the backround as heavy breathing right before they go to the credits looking at the myers house…IMO that is not grunting by any means…It is clearly heavy breathing
i wont go too much into discussing grunts, but yes there is obviously a big difference between the original myers ‘grunts’ and tylers in rz H2.
tylers grunts started in the remake when the threw the table but wasnt consistant through out the film. he did grunt alot more in H2 as if he was alot more angry.
but in the original H1 there are some light grunts. its a sound that requires the use of vocals cords to make so it is indeed not just heavy breathing.
go ahead, mimic the sounds he made in H1 yourself. now try to just “breath heavy” and see if you can get that sound. we have all done it more than once so we all know theres more to it than just a heavy breath. its a “light” grunt.
No, we don’t “all know” that. Almost anyone who’s ever had bronchitis or an asthma attack (or any other dilemma/situation in which you couldn’t breathe well…for whatever reason) knows that, yes it IS possible to make that sound while breathing. It’s called “labored breathing”…and it’s a cross between a wheeze and a regular deep, heavy breath. I always took it as not only Myers vocalizing his pain, frustration, anger, but also the fact that he was wearing a mask and his breathing is labored.
We can discuss the semantics of “grunts” and wheezes all day. Bottom line (as I’ve said a hundred times already), it’s not the grunting that bothered me so much as it was the overuse of the grunting. Just like the ridiculous swearing in the first film and the overkill stabbing in the 2nd…for me (and others) it crossed the line into parody/ridiculousness.
damn and i said i wasnt going to go into discussing grunts. but yes dr. wynn i have had bronchitis and know all about the weezing that is associated with it. we dont know for sure but i dont prefer to think of Michael as having bronchitis, asthma, or any Chronic Obstructive Pulminary Disease in the film. and just wearing the mask aloney isnt enough to cause labored breathing to that extent.
but take it easy, i agree with you. the grunts in rz H2 is excessive, i think it sould have been toned down abit to the level of “light grunts” that were in H1.
Am I giving the wrong impression in my posts? You’re the second person to have told me to “chill” or “take it easy” in as many days. I don’t feel like I’m coming off as hostile or excited…I’m certainly not angry, and I’m not being abusive or insulting. So, why is it that people keep saying this? Just curious…
i think your people probably left because the 1st scene of the movie was Really Gruesome!!
and i think anyone who would leave that early waisted their money…
and do not have an open mind at all to see what the rest of the movie was like…
as for the grunts…come one…it adds more realism to it to me…
obviously he was pissed when he was killing these people (multiple stabbings etc,)
I watch people get into fights every day and none of them are “silent”
how many of you workout and lift the heavy weights (not the 5lb’ers) and dont grunt
when you are getting to last of your reps?..
not only are you pissed off but your wearing a mask that you most likely cant breath out of very well
you know what i am talking about…we all have done it…the mask is to hot so we take it off and gasp
for breath…now try wearing the mask while beating someone up while sporting a hot ass beard lol
I don’t want to keep voicing my opinion on how bad this movie sucked (IN MY OPINION!) so this is all I’m going to say…promise!! Otherwise it is nothing more than trolling and I have no love of that kind of b.s. act.
However I did read a post earlier that could be taken to mean that 8-10 people didn’t really leave when I viewed the movie and that it could be in “our heads” (the people who are saying this happened when they attended the movie also). I would like to reply just to clear the air.
I wasn’t exaggerating when I said 8-10 people left. In fact I am being very conservative when I said this. The owner of the theatre is a friend of mine. I even let him use my Propshop H2 mask for a display over the weekend!! HE HIMSELF has told me several people complained about the movie and left. Not that it was too gruesome but that it SUCKED!!! It happened last weekend in the tone of “a dozen or so” people. Only 2 or 3 of those that left explained why but that was the reason that those people gave.
Again, this does not by any means change the fact some people liked it I’m just simply saying that there are SEVERAL accounts across the nation of this SAME THING happening. For MOST of us this film was GARBAGE!!! It wasn’t in our heads and we wasn’t “trying to not like it”.
I do form opinions that serve as my “presumptions” about things before experiencing them first hand at times but I also do this with an OPEN MIND>THAT is the key. I heard the remake sucked too but I still went in with an open mind and I actually think it is fair. Not “visionary” but decent. I hoped this movie would prove to be better than word-of-mouth as well but that wasn’t to be. Look at the movie SERIOUSLY and how can you really say otherwise?
That’ s not to say I don’t like ANYTHING about it.
Rob Zombie sucks as a writer, NOT as a director. I think some of the filming was good. I loved the way Myers looked in the rain. The filming itself wasn’t bad, it was the script…horrendous!!
In the end the film will either stand or fall on its own legs…not my opinions. We all know that the remake was a success but let’s see how this film fairs after the first month’s initial buzz. My honest opinion is this one won’t do well at all. The people who left early left for a reason. I didn’t see this happening during the remake. That should say something.
