Speaking only from my own experience as a collector and obsessive fan of the first film, I have a tremendous desire to own all of the actual items that were used in the film Halloween that make up the character Michael Myers. Period.
I want to own the real mask, the real knife, the real coveralls, and the real boots. The ones that were on screen.
Unfortunately, owning those items is an impossibility in many regards.
So, I do what many of us have done, I try to figure out what the next closest thing is.
That’s when lineage enters the conversation.
A mask with lineage, to me and many others, feels closer to owning the actual mask than a ground-up. Lineage is a tangible connection to the past and to the mask used in the film.
Simple as that.
Now, that’s what makes the hobby weird. A mask with lineage can look like crap compared to a ground-up and folks still want the one with lineage because of the preceived connection it has to the Hero mask.
We are an odd bunch.
Armed with the knowledge that fans and collectors will clamor over a mask with lineage, “artists” will sometimes leverage this in unscrupulous and nefarious ways. At worst, these people will lie, steal, and cheat. Emphasis on the lying and stealing.
Anyway, my journey of piecing together the greatest Myers costume I could possibly create took an unexpected turn. After securing the identical coveralls, knife, and boots, I had to decide on a mask. Not long ago, I was deadset on a mask with strong lineage that could be traced back as closely to the Hero as possible. Although I still desire this, I came to two conclusions on my journey.
- The hobby is over saturated with options that offer lineage connections. The best of those options is made by someone I don’t care to do business with for some of the aforementioned lever usage.
- I discovered that my desire to look like Michael Myers when I suit up is as strong as my desire to own the Hero mask.
That’s when I settled on a stretch mask. In my opinion, the ID is the greatest stretch mask ever made and it’s not particulary close. It was an easy decision. It just so happens to be a ground-up and that doesn’t bother me at all.
One day, I’ll settle on a lineage mask to add to my collection, but until then, my ground-up ID has scratched my itch.
