You got 2 people say H4 before you said ‘convinced’!! Wow. You said H4 is your favorite mask, yet you had to ask. If you have to ask between h1 and H4 then you should re-watch h1
The reason why I did’nt buy both…which I was thinking on doing because I was buying one for cosplay only and one for complete display with the tags. I got the vibe from others that the H4 was the best one out of the two. I Love the H4 in the film and I’m fond of the H1 being that was the movie I saw back in 1978. So the H1 is nostalgic for me even though I favor the H4 a bit more…if you get my drift. So when they both came out I was asking which mask did the members think was the best of the two. They said H4. If they said H1 was more accurate I would have bought two of those instead. Hope this clears up the case of the"stupid" thread.
Both are good. Neither is 100% accurate but they both look great. For $60 a pop it’s a great deal. All the little differences in the H1 mask is really what started this community and keeps it going so it’s nice to have a new ground up sculpt from Justin
Weird? Let me explain again…because I wanted one for costuming and one for display. and I was choosing either the H1 Or H4 …i chose the H4 because it was said it was a much better done mask in others opinions. End of story
I’m glad you’ve picked what you love best, which is most important. For me, though, the best (and only) mask worth buying is an H1. Nothing else comes close.
No offense, but your argument is a false equivalency. If the hero mask had existed in its final form on a rack somewhere and was used as is in the film, you’d have a valid point. No matter how “cheaply” it was “overhauled,” the fact is, the changes made to that $1.97 mask immediately transformed it into something more, something that could not then or now be purchased. The people in this hobby who spend lots of money on high-end masks are chasing the closest possible approximation of the hero mask, not the Kirk mask. They know it will never be perfectly recreated but pay money for what they feel is the best/closest to that original look and, most importantly, how the hero makes them feel. The fact is that, even with TOTS rather dubious offerings, no mass-produced mask has (or likely ever will or can) come close to recreating the look/feel of the hero as much as mask made by an indie creator. That’s what’s meant by “purist.” For many, myself included, there’s NO other mask or film but the original. It seems you’re defending a criticism of TOTS, but you’re not really using a valid argument to do it. If you appreciate and enjoy what TOTS offers, that’s great and I don’t hold anything against you. I’m glad you’re able to enjoy the look of those masks and are able to get what you love at a reasonable price. I was actually longing for the day TOTS would get the H1 license so I could a get an affordable fill-in until I can A) decide on an indie H1 and B) afford one. I’m no longer willing to spend any money on their products after the way fans and customers were treated over the H18, and I’m not the only one who feels this way. That said, I wouldn’t agree that TOTS masks are “shitty” by far. They are some of the best masks (not just HalloweeN-related) out there, and there’s a bunch (the HIIIs, Creepshow Nate, the Twilight Zone masks) I’d love to own but now refuse to buy because of what was done with H18.
I know there’s a lot of animosity on this site towards TOTS masks, but I think that’s unfair to the masks themselves and their fans. My animosity is toward Chris Zephro and certainly none of the TOTS fans here. I’m happy for those who are excited about getting the new masks this year. If I can swing it, I’m hoping to save up and order a Handiboy HalloweenMan (maybe!) in time for Halloween. I hope we’ll all get the masks we love, that they’ll all fit, and we’ll all enjoy the hell out of our favorite horror movie/franchise/holiday this year. It didn’t happen last year but I’m feeling optimistic about this year. I hope I’m not wrong!
C’mon, man. Assuming you’re not being a troll, take a step back and realize there’s nothing stupid about asking fellow fans for their opinions or discussing our mutual love of this hobby. If you don’t care for the thread, you’re in luck: there’s plenty more to dive into.
I want to address something this thread has managed to bring up: the original hero mask was NOT a “cheap, mass-produced mask.” The DP Kirk mask was. The Shape mask as finished by TML with Carpenter’s input is not something that was ever or will ever be A) mass-produced B) cheaply made. I know, some people are thinking, “yeah, but the mask was cheap and the paint was cheap.” Does that mean a painting by Monet or Da Vinci is “cheap” because it was painted with (let’s say for the sake of argument) cheap paints and a cheap canvas? TML’s crafting of the look of The Shape and Carpenter’s vision for the character, Castle’s portrayal, and the film itself made the hero art. Real art is never cheap or mass-produced.
The fact that he was able to buy of of each to begin with. The fact that his favorite mask, the H4 needed the swaying of strangers, 2 people to be exact, to make his choice… It’s just all pretty ridiculous. I could have kept my mouth shut, but why? I know this site only wants positive things being said, but that’s not life.
