I just recently added mask maker, Chris Morgan as a friend on Facebook. I looked at his masks and the guy does great work! How much does he charge? I saw a thread on here, complaining about him, so I’m a bit apprehensive about buying from him.
i always see complaints about like every artist. if he doesn’t seem to give you an attitude, i’d assume you should be fine. i don’t think chris morgan was known for scamming people. that once instance where he just got really frustrated with the other guy, he still refunded him the money.
Yeah. My friend made a Facebook post about Halloween II. Chris commented with a photo of one of his masks. I commented, asking him about it and he friend requested and messaged me. So yeah, he seems pretty cool, from what I can tell.
I heard he recasts a lot of stuff and he charges a lot of money for his masks but from what I see he doesn’t scam people and he seems like a really cool guy these days so I’m sure you’ll be okay man his work is actually pretty good
If you search the threads here you will definitely see some very passionate opinions about Chris Morgan. I started dealing with him sevreal months ago through FB messenger and for me, the experience has been a positive one. After talking with him, I decided on getting his GKY(new mold) in a 25". While it was not cheap, it was much more affordable then other high end masks. Needless to say, when I received the mask(about six weeks) I was very impressed with the workmanship.
Just to be clear, Chris does several things in the ordering/buying process that I really liked. For one, he doesn’t take your money until the mask is ready to be shipped. Also, if you are one of those guys that like to keep messaging the guy who is re-hauling/making your mask, he is going to beat you to it. I must have gotten dozens of texts(with pics) from the time the mask was pulled, during weathering, final touch ups and even the box being ready for shipment with tracking info. I wish this was the way it worked with all mask makers and re-haulers.
As I always warn anybody who is ordering a mask from someone they haven’t dealt with before, not every experience will be the same. I can only tell you that my experience with Chris was a good one and it netted me an amazing H1.
Does anyone know the typical price range for his masks? I wanna get something nice from and indy artist and I really like his work. Any ideas/quote you guys have since you’ve worked with him before?
In laymans terms, recasting is the process of taking another mask, making a mold of it, either altering or not altering the sculpt, then making copies to sell. It is a good and a bad thing. If you have the artist’s permission, it is fine. 99% of the time, most people will accept it being done to a rare or old mask, such as a 1975 DPS Kirk for example, but if the recast is made without permission of the artist it is highly frowned upon.
To my knowledge, the problem with Chris wasn’t ever his customer service, it was the fact that he lied about many origins of his masks, recast masks without permission, and was effectively stealing other artists work while doing so.
I’ve been told that the unwritten rule on these boards is not to tell people the price you paid as artists prefer to be asked directly for a quote. That being said, i know how frustrating it can be to want to know the cost of a mask for budgetary reasons and still not have an answer. I don’t think it would inappropriate for me to tell you that a new mask from Chris will run you in the $300-400 range. Of course, the more definitive an accurate price can be obtained by contacting him directly on FB messenger.
I sent him a message about two years ago via facebook. I had recently discovered his work and instantly became a fan. I messaged him about the prices of a particular mask and he got right back to me. I was excited so I remember saying something along the lines of, “great!! I can send you out the money today”. He got right back to me and told me he had too many mask that he was working on, and that he wasn’t starting anything new until he got caught up. He told me to get back to him in a few months. During this time, other things came up and I never got back to him. I would love to still get a mask from him but I have no idea if he’s still swamped like his was when I initially contacted him.
The SS78 was before the DIY(this would later become the GKY). You’re right Caleb, that one is a beast. There’s a guy named Hunter Hood on the FB pages that has posted worn pics and videos of his SS and it looks amazing. Chris still makes them as far as I know.
certainly not an unwritten rule as long as I’ve been here which is a long time…I am a maker myself and I think it’s dirty to give people different varying prices as well as many others who feel the same way…Definitely good to get peoples backs and tell them what prices generally are…Silent auctions are BS…That is why Makers on here and the FB forums are not allowed to post sales without a price
I purchased a mask from him and it went very smoothly. He provided updates in a timely manner. Responded quickly to questions. His Silent Stalker 78 is the best mask he has put out in my opinion. His price was very fair and in line with what the other top people charge for a completed mask.
I cannot listen to his podcast. It is extremely self indulgent. His overly friendly comments about and to Marianne Hagan and other notable guests make me cringe.
