Correct color of coveralls in Halloween 1978 movie

looks great, is it still from Die Hard?

Tommy lee Wallace said in the famous video the coveralls were green soaked in grey. Green being the primary color, he said its not olivewood because Olivewood is too brown. Kim Gottlieb walker the behind the scenes photographer described them as a dark green color.

Sears also had a color called Hunter green, Ive seen some jumpsuits theyre very close to the schhol scenes very dark dirty green

Tommy describes them as an effects guy would, the complete accurate details.

Nick describes them as a casual fan would, blue/grey, which is on par with a Navy/charcoal color.

To me, what’s most important when I’m cosplaying as Myers, is what the casual fan remembers them as. They all think of Navy colored coveralls. So to go with a charcoal or navy, is usually going to be closest to what the casual fan or crowd on a Halloween night or Comic Con will recognize as accurate.

For us hardcore collectors and fans who want every detail, then collecting the proper color is what is best.

In person, the green color looks off, or too green. It’s that weird way they come off in video or photographs that give them that distinct look. But going with a Navy or charcoal when in person, looks the part as they look in the film, to most casual goers.

So for my actual costume that I would wear out and about, I go with my navy Big Macs. My Big Macs are from the early 80’s and have that nice faded look that gives it the grey tone to the Navy, so they definitely look the part for cosplay.

It’s really no different than when someone wants a built in Castle stretch to their Myers mask. You want to appear as it does in the movie, so you want that built in stretch. Same for coveralls, if you want them to appear as they do in the movie, to most casual goers, then navy/charcoal is the closer color to what they will think of.

So I’m the kind of guy who has two sets of costumes. One for costuming, to appear accurate to a casual crowd, and one for collecting, to have as accurate to the actual items used in the film. So in my opinion, both are purchase worthy.

I’d rather just go all out, people are still gonna call you “Jason” (still pisses me off these days) when I do my scare at a haunt, I’ve had some people get scared at how accurate my costume was with the Green Big Macs I have, I have charcoal as a pair now which will I will use next

The fact that after decades of these films being out there, that there are people who still call us “Jason” when we are out and about, is unbelievable to me man. This past Halloween I thought I was about to make it through a whole night without it, and then a couple comes by and sure enough, “hey it’s Jason!!”. And I mean it’s not even a rib, they are dead serious. It’s just baffling to me. No amount of correct coveralls or masks is ever going to fix that ridiculous problem. :unamused:

Worse, impossible rather.

The same subject, over and over again…
We still can’t say it with a 100% accuracy because, for the moment, like TheGhostlyShape said, we don’t have all the clues yet.
I guess “Tex green” (or maybe “Hunter Green”) is the right color.
We should stop talking about blue, even if dark navy blue looks alright for the vulgum pecus’ eyes when they go trick-or-treating and they cross the path of a Myers’ cosplayer.

I own two Tradewears. One charcoal, one green (Tex ? Hunter ? Spruce ? Impossible to know).
I put them both in front of seven of my friends, and showed them “JC’s Halloween” at the same time.
Some saw them grey on the screen. Some saw them green.
A girl thought my green ones were grey.
Not one could exactly say the exact tint they saw.
And they’re kids - some twice younger than I am - with perfect vision and not colorblind.

You have to remember another thing : you shouldn’t compare coveralls from a brand to another.
I did put my charcoal Tradewears, my charcoal BM and charcoal Red Kaps side by side : the color isn’t absolutely the same.
Very close, yes, but not the same.
The Tradewears are vintage but I guess, from their state, they weren’t worn lots of time.
The BM are vintage, bought from a farmer in Montana, so used a lot and washed a few times.
Red Kaps are new, and I never wore them (they were already too large for me at that time), so they remain new.
I guess their colors weren’t the same even if they were all brand new.
And I’m sure not even the Sears coveralls use exactly the same fabric all the time, hence, subtle differences between models.
Inside my green Tradewears’ chest pocket, I found an old label, folded in two, saying my coveralls were made in the USA.
I don’t know if we can know where all of the coveralls are made : some in Mexico ? some in China ?
So, different places. Different fabrics. Different shades. Same color names…

Just a proposition (not an easy one, I know), but each of us who owns Tradewears (grey or green) should try and take pictures following a precise set of rules in order to show them with “exactly” the same lighting and the same condition (ex : outside on a wall facing the sun, inside with just a 60W ceiling light, etc.). Maybe one of the pictures will definitely appear as the same as Myers’.

Another proposition : can’t we just stab people who calls us “Jason” ?

Yeah, SerialWriter has posted pics of both his tradewears side-by-side and on camera they look almost identical. In person, I’m sure the “green” pair look more green, and if Tommy Lee Wallace describes them as “GREEN and grey”, I’d have to lean towards green personally.

Take a shot everytime I said green :drinkers:

Lawson that was perfectly worded bro totally agree with u !!

Didn’t know the Jason shit would happen in the US as well, where the character is supposed to be well known, here in Europe happens all the time and it’s very annoying…

Yeah those are diehard grey ones

Nick Castle says smoky grey, Tommy Wallace says greyish green. I’m going to go with what Castle says, no offense to Wallace. Castle spent a lot more time in those coveralls than Wallace did.

Or they’re both right, as seen with the tradewear coveralls that have surfaced. And if anything Wallace would’ve seen them more because he wasn’t constantly in them I’d think

He wore them in 3 scenes and would have been on set a lot with Nick

I honestly believe they borrowed those coveralls from someone. They talk like they weren’t too sure of the color either, so they possibly got the Coveralls from someone they know, and the wear and weathering sort of distorted the color.

Here are stills of around him grabbing the kid.

1st photo is colorized so it’s not entirely accurate, but I love that photo!

looks charcoal to me here

I have spruce green red kaps and they change from green to grey to blue, depending on the lighting. Probably the same with the originals.
