Could someone answer this for me?

This question has always boggled my mind and I decided to hop on real quick to get an answer. As some may know, artist Bill Malone sculpted a mask that was on set of ‘Halloween’ but wasn’t used for the film, but in many documentaries and such you’ll hear them talk about how they couldn’t afford to make a mask and went with the quick bleached Kirk which we all know and love. How did the Malone Myers mask come to be if they supposedly couldn’t afford to make a mask? Did it come in once they already started filming with the Kirk? Been in my mind for awhile and was curious. Might already be a thread discussing it but idk. If you got an answer then please let me know.

I hadn’t heard about this mask being on the set of the original film. Curious to hear some feedback on this.

It was for H4, I think, not H1 or 2

I believe this is correct.

This is incorrect…the mask was never made or used for H2 or H4

When Tommy and the “Halloween people” went to Don Post Studios… they had 4 kirks made for them according to a source. All finished with rubber cement paint… 3 were brought back to the set that Tommy modified further. Ripping the brows burns off … The 4th kirk aka “malone myers” or “sister mask” was one of the kirks made up for Halloween 78 that never made it back to the set…Bill Malone kept the mask which he still owns I believe. Pictured below…

Oh wow… thanks Jimmy. Very informative.

Thanks, Jimmy! I thought the mask was on set in H1 but they just never used it. Bothered me for awhile so thanks for clearing that up.

Tommy Lee Wallace stands by his story of buying Kirk masks at a local costume shop and converting them personally. I see no reason to believe otherwise. I don’t believe Don Post had anything to do with the original film. The Malone mask doesn’t match the screen used '78 masks in application or style.

This ^. I’ve spoken to Tommy and he remains consistent and strong in his story that DPS had nothing to do with the H1 masks. I even asked specifically about this and he said

“I purchased a Captain Kirk mask at a prominent costume shop on Hollywood Boulevard. I made some modifications to it, and once it was approved, I purchased several more and did the same modifications to them – not certain how many: Could’ve been as few as three, maybe as many as five. On the original “Halloween”, there was absolutely no outside help from Don Post or anyone else.”

There’s absolutely no proof that DPS had anything to do with the H1 masks. They didn’t have any claim to helping with H1 until the middle of a lawsuit when it was beneficial for their wallets.

Uhhhh… this story just took a hard left. Not sure what to think now.

The go to thread about this matter, IMO, is this one by Precarious from a few years ago. It is super in depth and harbors a lot of great discussion.

I just got done skimming over that thread. Wow… that was a lot to take in. I’d have to say that after reading everything that was in that thread I’m undecided as to what I personally believe. I mean… it could go either way. There’s no solid evidence to prove either story. Just opinions. We need direct quotes from people who were involved. And sadly I don’t think we’ll ever get them. And I’m talking about John Carpenter, Tommy Lee Wallace, Debra Hill “deceased”, Nick Castle and Irwin Yablans.

To be honest I think everyone wanted a slice of fame for the infamous mask lol good discussion non the less  I’m just going by the books account along with Rob Tharp and Bill Malone. I want nothing more than Tommy being the souls person who captures lightning in a bottle.

I talked to tommy and posted his direct quote above ^. As far as John, he said he did not remember. Debra is deceased of course so there’s no contacting her.

That clears it up, really have lost what this mask was for, wonder how it looks now after 40 years

It really doesn’t, unfortunately. There’s absolutely no proof that this mask was left over or made for H1. And Tommy modifying masks from DPS on set of H1 is completely denounced by him, and who better would remember?

I had to look at the thread again and see your comments with his statement, honestly wonder why they don’t use that kirk to resculpt and make the mold to sell new copies, that’s if it’s from the 75 master

Does anyone believe the 75 master still exists maybe stolen and kept by someone or was it most likely destroyed. I hope it turns up one day
