Do you think the original Halloween was somewhat boring?

I just finished watching Halloween (1978) on Blu-ray, and have to say that I think it’s a pretty boring movie! It will always be a classic and one of the best horror films ever, but as far as watching it nowadays for the 20th time, I wasn’t really stimulated. The later sequels (H4, for example) are worse than the original, but they have more action in them and in my opinion better character development.

In the original Halloween, the characters Annie, Lynda, and Bob were hardly developed (you didn’t really feel any substance there when only those characters were in a scene), whereas side characters in Halloween 4, like Kelly and Brady, seemed to be developed more.

I’m not saying H4 is better than H1, I’m just saying that H1 is more boring and less developed (although it is a better movie).

You have to remember they had more money on the later movies, without telling my age i had seen H1 3 times when it came out in the 70’s,i watched the vhs over and over and then the dvd,and when they rereleased it again on big screen again i went ,boring never, the only thing that made me mad was how far away they got from the org.mask ,maybe someone here may have read why they did it.

If you think the movie is boring because it doesn’t have action, then you are missing the point. Perhaps you’ll love the shaky camera bit in the Rob Zombie movies if you want more “action”. Or perhaps just go watch Rambo or something, if you want action. In my opinion, horror films shouldn’t be about “action”. They’re around execution. And I mean that in both ways.

The original will never be boring, I too saw this movie in theaters back in the day, and the reason why they were not able to use the same mask in the sequels is because of legal issues with the rights to the mask…Dean

I’ll take suspense over action any day. -Tom.

:drinkers: agreed to that!

Yeah…it’s so boring i can’t stop watching it!!!

:drinkers:

Boring? Absolutely not. Boring because you’ve seen it 500+ times? Sure, I can see that, but the film itself is not boring.

:drinkers: :drinkers: :drinkers:

its all about suspense- thats the point.

I intentionally shot everything just way too long and I noticed I didn’t have to cut it short. I noticed that I could just play it and it just seemed to hold. When you are directing…and it’s a very strange thing…40% of what you have shot is too slow and you need to speed up everything up to 40%. When I shot Halloween, I thought we could even go longer than we did, but I had to cut scene’s in certain cases.

Stretching the audience’s patience makes the audience nervous and uncomfortable. “Why don’t they just move on?” they ask themselves. That’s why when something slams out of nowhere, when the action happens out of the darkness, it’s such a jolt. Then I slow it back down again and people get really uncomfortable. I wanted to create a feeling of uneasiness.

(A MUST READ BOOK!)

The first Halloween is terribly overrated. Not only is it boring, it’s nowhere near as good as Rob Zombie’s films. The answer? Because it’s not bloody at all. If there was some intestines and face stabs, it probably would have been a lot better. Plus, why John Carpenter decided to put a sheet on top of Bob and Lynda while they were having sex… UGH. They should have shown everything. The other thing is the music. It sounds like some cheesy soap opera music and there is no creativity in the classic theme. It’s literally 2 or 3 notes on the piano.

End joke. Are you kidding me? The original Halloween is amazing, not boring at all.

The OG is definitely NOT boring! Not only is the film a masterpiece and started the phenom known as Michael Myers. But think about all the 1000’s of friendships that have been made due to the movie alone. None of us would be here doing what we are if the OG was boring. Yes the film is dated, just like any other film, but thats its charm. Suspense trumps gore anyday!

I agree with Mtlongy. Suspense!

Not for me,still as enthrawling today as it was the first time i ever seen it,see thats the thing about a Classic Masterpiece it never grows old and keeps you coming back for more, that movie has the same effect on me everytime i watch it.

I’m bored to tears by it.The way I deal with it is by watching it a few hundred times, devoting as much time as I can to this board, stockpiling Myers masks and permanently inking my body in it’s honor. That usually cures the boredom…then I watch it more.

shame on you…

Chyea! I still get chills from Michael walking across the street after Laurie. Even if I watched it twice in a row.

Couldnt have said it better.
